I have my first drafts for the covers above. I really like the "Angels" cover so I might publish that one right away, but I'm not too happy with the "Together" cover so I am still taking suggestions for that one!
This one- shot was a request from (long ago) ColleenODriscoll
FYI: Connie is an OC I probably will never write about again. She's my OC for the Flash TV show-- the daughter of Caitlin and Ronnie aka Firestorm. She's got Ronnie's powers, but unlike her father she does not need to blend with anyone to use those powers. Just a backstory. Carry on!
M'gann stood in the outside his apartment. She had to see him. She had to tell him before it was too late.
Connor opened the door, messily dressed in black dress pants, an untucked button-up shirt, and a tie that hung around his neck.
"M'gann!" He exclaimed, obviously surprised.
The redhead bowed her head, staring at the floor. "I...I know this is an intrusion," she murmured, tucking her bangs behind her ear.
"No, no! Come in, Connor urged. A little too excitedly for hid ex-girlfriend, M'gann thought.
However suspicious, she did enter his apartment, taking in the bachelor mess. The papers, the takeout containers scattered everywhere, the dishes piled in the sink.
It was a good thing that he was getting married.
"So, how's Connie?" M'gann ventured as Connor closed the door, trying to find the right words to tell him.
This was different. He'd been the one to tell her first, and after that, they didn't need to talk, they had the mindlink to just feel and think. But even without it they knew how the other was feeling with just a look, a touch.
Now that was all gone.
"She's excited." Connor smiled half-heartedly and rubbed the back of his neck. "Very excited."
"And you aren't?" M'gann asked.
Connor shrugged. "Nervous."
M'gann looked around, at anywhere but Connor. "Well, if Wally is any example, that's to be expected."
They both laughed lightly, and then the silence reigned.
"I...I wanted to wish you good luck for tomorrow, say congratulations."
"You aren't going to be there?" Connor's face fell, and M'gann was confused. Sure, she and Connor had become good friends again, after so long, but did he really want his ex-girlfriend there on his wedding day?
"No," she looked down, adjusting the strap of her crossbody purse so that it wasn't so close to her neck and choking her. "Uncle J'onn and I decided to go visit Mars tomorrow. And besides, I doubt Connie wants me to be there." She said, playing with the purse zipper nervously.
"M'gann..." she gasped when she looked up, seeing that Connor was standing right in front of her, not across the room as he had a minute ago. He took her hands in his.
It felt so natural, so right. He was so close, and M'gann just wanted to close the distance between the two of them and kiss him.
She spotted his tie, hanging undone around his neck. Instead of kissing him, as she so desperately wanted to, she took her hands from his and showed him the right way to do a tie.
"There." She patted her handiwork. "That's better."
"No, no it's not." Connor's thoughts were so familiar, and so loud and insistent she heard them without even trying.
"M'gann," he tried again, taking her hand and holding it to his cheek.
M'gann blinked back tears. Yanking her hand from his she headed for the door.
"Goodbye Connor."
She didn't see his heartbroken face as she slammed the door shut behind her.
She couldn't tell him.
-------
Connor stood outside the door to the reception room and realized- he couldn't do it.
Connie was an amazing girl. Energetic, sassy, pretty, brainy, and superpowered.
The more he thought about it, however, the more nervous he got. Connie didn't have M'gann's big heart, her gentle touch, she didn't have that naive curiosity that M'gann did, and Connie was nowhere near as beautiful as M'gann.
He closed his eyes and tried to picture his life, a future with Connie. But the girl with long, dark hair and dark brown eyes always turned back to a bouncy redhead with short red hair, amber eyes, and emerald green skin with a light dusting of freckles on her nose. Every time her thought about Connie, it always turned into M'gann.
M'gann. How much he missed her, wanted her, needed her.
He had to call off the wedding.
All he had to do was hope that the bioship hadn't left yet.
After a hurried explanation and Connie's thoughtful forgiveness to Connor's last-minute announcement, Superboy raced to the nearest zeta-tube, heading for the Watchtower.
Thankfully, Martian Manhunter was in the mission room, checking something or other on the League's computers.
"Superboy, aren't you-"
"I'm sorry, J'onn, but where's M'gann?" Connor interrupted.
Utterly and completely confused, J'onn pointed Connor in the direction of the garage. with a quick "thanks" thrown over his shoulder, Connor ran down the hall, throwing off his fancy suit jacket, which was only slowing him down.
He arrived in the garage in time to see M'gann, still in her Miss Martian uniform, about to board the bioship behind Beast Boy.
"M'gann!" He cried.
She froze, one step on the ramp, and turned to face Connor who was shoving boxes and barrels of who-knows-what out of his way.
"Connor? Aren't you-"
By that moment he had reached her, and cut her off with a kiss.
Surprised, M'gann pushed him back. "A-aren't you getting married? What about Connie, y-your wedding?" She spluttered.
"M'gann, please." He begged, taking her hand and placing his fingers on her lips to quiet her. The Martian girl went silent.
"I love you, I always have, and I always will. Connie made me realize that I'll never be happy with anyone else. You've always been with me and I can't see myself without you.
"If you've moved on, I understand, but please, M'gann, do you love me too?"
For a moment, there was nothing but the sound of their heavy breathing. M'gann hardly knew what to do. Yes, she wanted to tell him that she loved him, but she never expected him to rebound with "I love you too".
"I-I-I...I think I still love you, too."
Happily, Connor pulled M'gann in for a kiss. She embraced him with the same enthusiasm, throwing her arms around his neck. They held on to each other tightly, now knowing that they'd never let go.
And then they realized--they'd known it all along.
