WARNING: BRACE YOURSELVES
"Are you doing anything tonight?" Connor asked as the team dispersed from the mission briefing.
M'gann shook her head. "Aside from making sure that Gar does his homework?"
"M'GANN, IT'S SUMMER!" Gar whined from across the room. Before she could run after him, Gar leaped on Bart's back and followed Jaime and Tim through the zeta-tubes. Off on another adventure already.
Connor chuckled. "Want to go get something to eat at Shelly's? I'd invite Mal and Karen too, but Karen's at the lab and Mal is at a job interview or...something."
M'gann nodded, already shifting from her uniform to civvies. "Sounds great, let me get my purse."
Connor couldn't tell if she was doing this because she pitied him or because she really wanted to be with him. It had been a month since they'd officially apologized to each other and they were taking it slow. Connor was proud that M'gann had stopped destroying the minds of other people, but he still harbored a little bit of guilt for calling her a monster. more than anything else, he wanted to make it up to her.
He grabbed his jacket and met her by the Watchtower's zeta-tubes. At the last second, before the light could swallow them, he grabbed her hand.
The happy couple was in no hurry. They walked down Happy Harbor's streets under the streetlights, talking and enjoying the pleasant summer night air.
At Shelly's their old waitress smiled as she recognized Happy Harbor High's strongest football player and cheerleader couple, immediately seating them in their usual seat next to the window and running off to serve up their usual milkshakes "on the house!"
The floor was checkered with black and white, with pink seats and silver tables. It had a fifties atmosphere that M'gann loved. Connor could care less about the appearance, but he loved the food, and he loved to see M'gann happy. It was a win-win.
Shelly beamed at Connor and M'gann as she came out of the kitchen balancing their shakes on her tray. "I haven't seen you kids in ages! How ya been?"
"Good."
"We're doing great, Shelly." M'gann smiled.
"And Megan, you got a haircut! I almost didn't recognize ya! How are your friends? The quarterback and the head cheerleader?"
"Karen and Mal are still dating, and Karen's working at Palmer technologies." Connor was happy to let M'gann do all of the talking.
"Well tell them I said hello. Now you'll be wanting your regulars?"
"You still remember them?"
The older waitress slapped Connor's shoulder with her little notebook. "Don't doubt a woman's memory, Mister Kent!" She sashayed back into the kitchen with M'gann in a fit of giggles.
"I missed this," She sighed, taking a sip of her strawberry milkshake.
Connor ate the cherry off the top of his chocolate milkshake and reached across M'gann's table to hold her hand.
"Wait a minute, did she say if she was bringing our food or not?"
In a burst of cliche, an explosion across the street prevented M'gann from answering. Connor dived to shield her from the fire, and screams mixed with the sound of shattering glass.
"Didn't we just leave this party?" Connor shrugged off his jacket and M'gann quickly switched to her uniform, just in case.
They found the perpetrator in the middle of the street
"Parasite!" Superboy growled.
"But we just locked you up!" Miss Martian recounted.
The veins on Parasite's purple form bulged as he laughed. "I still had a bit of Wonder Brat's powers post-unconciousness," He growled. "The idiots thought I wouldn't need an inhibitor collar, so I had enough strength to punch my way out of the van and fly here, where I knew you'd be!" He licked his lips.
"Now, bon appetite!" He flew at Connor, gripping Superboy's throat and draining his powers in a second.
"Superboy, no!" M'gann's eyes flashed green, and before she could think, she attacked at the mental barriers surrounding parasites mind.
Connor saw her eyes flash green as Parasite droppe dhim to the ground.
"M'gann, no!" he cried.
She gasped, having heard his voice. She returned to the physical world and Parasite fainted. She was relieved to see that he wasn't drooling, and his mind was fully intact.
"Connor, I...I'm so sorry." She gasped, "It...it was instinct...." But she should have known better. She should have been better, she should have trained herself, and it shouldn't have been her first impulse.
Connor's powers were half-drained, and without shields, it would take a while to get them back.
He looked at M'gann in terror. He knew she didn't mean to, be she had.
He gripped his fists and squeezed hos eyes shut.
Things were never going to be the same.
