^^ Chase Maverick

Chapter 18

Eric's POV:

"Hey!" Someone yelled angrily. They looked back and Chase Maverick stood in the doorway staring Sam down hard.

"Chase? What do you want?" He asked.

"I want you to leave him alone Sam. Okay?" He said folding his arms across his broad chest. For some reason Sam listened to Chase easily. Sam turned back to me and shook his head.

"See you at practice, Rivers." He said and I gulped as he returned inside.

"Well shit." I muttered as Chase walked closer to me.

"Are you okay?" He asked.

"Huh? Oh uh yea. You didn't have to do that." I said and he sent me a friendly smile.

"Why would I let a dick like Sam Bennett say that?" He asked.

"Because you don't know me?" I shrugged and he chuckled.

"Listen kid, I helped you out because I didn't like what he was doing. You could just say thank you."

"Thanks." I mumbled and his gaze softened. He stuck out his hand and I took it cautiously.

"I'm Chase."

"Eric." I answered.

"You're a Rivers?" He asked curiously.

"I-I am..." I said, once people find out I'm a Rivers they treat me differently.

"Relax kid, my dad works with your dad."

"How?"

"My father is the principal at your school. Principal Maverick?" He said.

"Oh..." I said surprised. My dad did donate a lot of money to our school.

"So why don't you go to our school?" I asked.

"I can't because the board thinks my dad would fix my grades or something." He shrugged.

"That sucks." I said scratching the back of my neck.

"So...you play football?" He asked trying to make conversation.

"I do, I'm just a second string though." I shrugged non-chalantly.

"What position do you play?" He asked.

"Quarter back, Logan Masterson is our original QB but he is graduating this year."

"Nice, do you play anything else?"

"I don't really have time to, we do football all year around. The winter is training."

"That's true. I do competitive swimming at Spencer's and if we aren't in the pool then we are working out." He said.

"Dude, can we head home?" Ethan asked stepping out. He glanced at Chase and folded his arms.

"And you are?" He asked protectively. Ethan was about ten minutes older than me and he took it to the next level.

"E..." I began rubbing my forehead.

"I'm Chase." Chase said holding out his hand. Ethan took it cautiously and eyed him.

"I'm Ethan, Eric's brother."

"Twins?" He asked looking between us.

"Identical." I said keeping my arms folded and watching Ethan.

"Don't you have a girlfriend to go see too?" Ethan asked rudely.

"I don't have a girlfriend...not really into that." He said mumbling the last part. What?
