The three of them continued their trek through the forest, every step getting closer and closer to Kaede's village. To her brother. Hāmonī thought of what she would say to him.
What could she say?
He, after all, thought she was dead.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a noise. Not from Yuri, for once. But a rustle. From the trees. A whisper.
She halted, and Minto and Yuri froze beside her. Her ears perked as she heard it again. Almost a mumble. She strained her ears.
"Stupid lazy little.... I swear.... take care of it themselves... I'm leaving." a soft voice, muttering to itself. Even with her ears, she could barely hear it. She couldn't even determine what gender it was.
If it had one.
She slowly drew her knives. Yuri slowly slid off Minto, who got in his fighting stance.
The thing, whatever it was paused. Maybe it knew it had been noticed. Hāmonī didn't care. "Who goes there?" she called "I'm warning you-" She was cut off by a vine whipping toward her face. She leapt back, the tip of the vine grazing her cheek, and a line of blood was drawn on it. She cursed.
Of course the vine had to have thorns on it.
"Get out of the way!" she called to Yuri as another vine came whipping toward them. Yuri didn't think twice, but dashed a good distance away. Minto turned back into a cat sized demon, and gave Hāmonī a look. A planning look. She had to keep the attention on her.
She turned back to the tree, and with cries of "Frozen Stab!", threw shards of ice at the creature, keeping her occupied as Minto stealthily climbed the tree. Hāmonī smiled inwardly. That clever cat.
Soon, Minto had made it to the top, and flickered to his full form. Before it could even utter an "eep!" of surprise, Minto had pounced, sending it crashing to the forest floor, and a moan of pain erupted from the creature. Hāmonī approached, expecting an enemy...
And got a 7 year old girl.
Well, not a girl, not really. Not a human one, anyway.
This girl had leaf-green skin, and hair just a shade darker. Her eyes, wide and brown, peered up at her. Her lips, the same color as her hair, were opened in an O of shock. She was thin, and limber. Long, twig-like fingers gripped the soil beside her. She was clad in a green, oddly bark-like textured dress, that went down to her ankles.
She spoke in a soft, breathy voice. "W-who are you?" she said, trembling head to toe.
Hāmonī folded her arms over her chest. "You're going to answer the questions hear." she replied, glaring at the shaking girl. "Now who are you?"
The girl gulped "M-m-my name's Kiyōna. I'm a dryad."
Hāmonī looked at the girl. She didn't seem to be lying. "Okay, Kiyōna. Why are you here?"
"I'm running away from home," she sighed, sitting up, brushing the dirt off her dress. "I lived with my brothers. But they didn't treat me nice, and they made me do all the chores and so I... wait... are you a half demon?"
Hāmonī blew a strand of hair out of her face "What's it to you?"
"N-nothing," the girl said, scooting back "But you look an awful lot like this Inuyasha everyone's talking about."
"That's because I'm his sister. I'm going looking for him." she replied.
"Oh glory," Kiyōna said with awe "He's you brother? And you're on a quest to look for him?" She jumped deftly to her feet and scurried up to Hāmonī. "I'm coming with you." she declared.
"What?! No!! You can't just-" Hāmonī spluttered, before being overtaken by Kiyōna.
"It doesn't matter what you say." announced Kiyōna breathlessly "You're an adventure waiting to happen. I'll just follow you. And if you kill me, I'll haunt you."
Hāmonī pondered the merits of this. She really didn't need a ghost following her around.
"Fine." she eventually replied "But you have to share watch."
"Absolutely!" she squealed, and started dancing around the path.
Hāmonī rolled her eyes and grabbed Kiyōna by the hand, dragging her toward Yuri and Minto.
This was going to be a long, long journey.

Hey my apprentices,
Hope you've liked the latest chapter. I have, in fact, decided to go with the Friday schedule, at least until Spring Sports. Then I'll probably start updating Thursday.
How do you like our new character, Kiyōna? Another addition to Hāmonī's little band. And what's this about Inuyasha thinking Hāmonī is dead? Hmmmmm...... ;).
7.5k reads. I can hardly believe it. Thank you so, so much.
