As Hāmonī and Minto continued on their way, Hāmonī started to smell burning wood. They soon realized the source of the smell was a small village on their way to Kaede's Village. Advancing onto the scene, Hāmonī breathed in deeply. "It's probably the work of a fire demon of some sort. At least, that's what I smell." she murmmered.
"Any survivors?" whispered Minto
"Not that I can-" she stopped, eyes narrowing "Wait a second" She abruptly leapt to her feet, sniffing the air. "Hmmm..... Cleverly concealed, so cleverly. I almost missed it."
"Missed what?"
"Small, young, must be tiny. 9 maybe? Yes, nine. The scent.... Lavender. Very clever."
Slowly, she crept toword a colapsing hut. The door was hanging at and odd angle, half the thatched roof was falling in, and the wood looked brittle, as if a single touch would have made it fall in. Slinking through the destroyed doorway, the twosome examined the scene. A burnt table, a woven rug, and a rough blanket was all that was there. Minto nudged the blanket, and a tiny, ashen face appeared. The girl (it was a girl) rubbed her eyes. And then she saw Hāmonī.
"AHHHHHH!" She shreeked "A demon! A demon!" She buried herself in the blanket. Hāmonī was extremely distressed. "It's okay, it's okay. I won't hurt you." she soothed.
The girl peeked out. "But you're a demon." she whispered.
Hāmonī sighed "I know. But that doesn't mean I'll hurt you."
The girl sat up "All demons are awful. Everyone knows that."
Hāmonī held out her hand "I'm not."
The girl looked at it warily "Why?"
Hāmonī thought about it. Minto suggested "Because she's only half demon." The girl accepted the hand up. She brushed herself off and said "The cat talks." It wasn't a question.
"Yes" answered Hāmonī. "He is from the village of the demon slayers."
The girl cocked her head "They let you in?"
Hāmonī nodded "I'm a human every half moon. So I'll be human tommorow. What's your name?"
The girl paused "Yuri."
"Well, Yuri" said Hāmonī "You'd better come with me
