The "we" in Hāmonī's sentence soon turned into a she. Minto had to go reassure that stubborn brother of hers that she was, in fact OK, Yuri was scared to death of the demons, and Kiyōna had caught some illness from some sick trees, which meant Akihiko had to stay behind and tend to her.
Oh well. It was her Koga was looking for anyway.
She padded through the temporary tents of the wolf demons, glancing left and right at their faces. Honestly, she had no clue why Koga had called her here. Pay off a debt? Why would he even care?
Eventually, though, she made it to his tent, and ducked inside. There was Koga, sitting cross legged on the ground, frowning. He glanced at Hāmonī, opened his mouth to speak, and then closed it again. She folded her arms. "Why are you doing this?"
He whipped his eyes to hers, blue holding the gold. "What do you mean?" he said slowly. Hāmonī waved her hand. "This. Paying off a debt. Why are you going through so much trouble just because I shielded you?"
He shook his head. "I hate owing people." he said gruffly "So how can I pay you back?" But Hāmonī wasn't finished yet. Not by a long shot. "Still. You don't have to do this. You hate my brother and I. Why would you want to help one of us?"
The demon scowled. "There is a difference between you and your brother. You are more... bearable than him. And you saved my life. I have to repay that." She cocked her head, considering his words. "What makes me better than my brother? I mean, we're both half-demons. We're both "mutts". What makes me better than him? Because it's obviously not power wise."
Koga was growling now. "Do you want to keep talking or can I pay you back already?" he said with clenched teeth. Hāmonī sat down, her hair pooling onto the ground around her. "What I want is an answer. You've made me curious. Will you consider that repayment?" But Koga was already shaking his head. "You saved my life. I can't repay it with a simple answering a question. It wouldn't feel right."
Hāmonī sighed. Men and their pride. "Fine, but it's a start. Just answer the question. I won't ask any more." Koga sighed. "Fine. 1, although you and your brother did fight me , you were not arrogantly taunting me. You considered it a fight, plain and simple. 2, you could have escaped if you wanted to. But you couldn't escape with Kagome, and wouldn't leave without her. 3, you helped me in the fight with the Birds of Paradise, even though I was your enemy." he shrugged, and she thought she noticed a pink tinge to his ears. "That's pretty much it."
Hāmonī pondered this. He was right. She often forgot that she had a tendency to be nicer to people than her brother. And she hadn't wanted to escape without Kagome because she had been kidnapped trying to rescue her anyway. And with the Bird of Paradise... she didn't know why she helped him. Probably because they had had a common enemy and she wanted to keep some attention off her.
Yeah. That was it.
She snapped out of it when she heard a loud cough. She blinked, looking at Koga. "Sorry, just thinking... how should you repay me? I mean, I don't think I need anything. Hmmm..." she wondered, trailing off. She was looking at Koga, who was shifting uncomfortably "What is it?" she asked.
"Well... you could stay here. At our camp, I mean." At the look of confusion on Hāmonī's face, he continued "Until we figure out how I can repay you." Hāmonī nodded. "Okay. Deal." she said, and shook his hand. The feel of those strong, calloused fingers gripping her hand made suddenly made her stomach flutter, and she could feel a pink tinge growing up her neck. She released his hand and looked away. What was wrong with her?
A scream, coming from outside the camp, brought the two of them to their feet. "That's Yuri!" gasped Hāmonī, and she sprinted out, Koga at her side. "I can hear some of my wolves too," he said to Hāmonī "Do you think you can sheild both of us, and not pass out?" Not bothering to answer, she intertwined her fingers with Koga's, the golden light already spreading across their bodies.
They ran toward the scream, hand in hand.
