Chapter 31: The Rescue

Hāmonī started towards him, then caught herself. Hiding behind a pillar, she scanned the room. Most of the cages were empty. In fact, there was only three other peoples in cages. A young fox demon with long blonde hair,  her fox tail curled around her feet as she slept. A white wolf with icy blue eyes who sat in a cage next to the girl, watching over her. And a black haired woman with a four pointed star on her forehead, a red stripe on each cheek, pale skin, and a white kimono with black and silver orchids. She looked totally passed out, beyond the point of sleeping, a coma perhaps.

At that moment Chiki and the other woman from before came in. "What do you mean you can't get his shards?!" the woman snapped at Chiki, who flinched. "It's Hāmonī's power, Lady Kagura. She can surround people with a golden shield. It's impossible to get them now."

"Well try harder! Or do you want me to kill your friend?" Kagura said angrily, gesturing at the black haired girl. Chiki gulped "N-no, Lady Kagura. I'll get to it now." 

  Hāmonī watched as the subdued Chiki approached Koga, and felt her heart squeeze with sympathy. She was doing all this to save another. It made her feel less angry about the betrayal. She waited until Kagura left the room, then slowly approached Chiki. The girl whirled around, opening her mouth, but Hāmonī lifted a finger to her lips, mouthing 'Trust me.'

She crept up to Chiki's friend's cage, and put her hands against it. "Fiery Claw." she whispered. The bars heated up, then slowly began to melt. She melted a hole large enough to get the woman out, and carried her to Chiki. 'Go.' she mouthed, and Chiki ran into the passage, carrying her friend.

Hāmonī turned to the wolf's cage next. She only had to melt a small whole so the wolf could wriggle out. The wolf stood watch as Hāmonī worked on the fox demon's cage, and licked the girl awake. "M-mika? Wha-?" She caught Hāmonī's pointed shushing and sat silent, stroking the wolf.

She turned finally to Koga's cage. He had sat patiently watching her the entire time. "I was wondering when you'd get to me," he murmured softly. She grinned "I saved the best for last," she whispered, and he chuckled quietly. As she helped him out, he whispered urgently "Hāmonī, we have ti get out of here right now. If Kagura catches us..." he let it hang in the air, and she didn't want to know the rest. "You!" she called softly to the girl. "It's Aqua." she murmured, walking over to them. "Aqua, let's get you and your wolf out of here."

The hurried toward the passage, Koga having a conversation with the wolf, Mika. They pulled into the twisting hallway, Koga slightly ahead. They had just turned a corner when Koga stopped short. Pulling up beside him, Hāmonī grimaced. 

"There she is," Kagura said, almost purring "I was worried that you weren't here." Then, waving her hands slightly, she called "Kassei-ka shimasu!" Hāmonī felt like an invisible wave washed over her, and Koga paled.

Kagura smiled. "I don't make idle threats. You can go this time, but believe me, there will be a next time." She laughed evilly as she shrunk and rode her leaf down the hall, disappearing as she turned a corner.

Aqua caught up to them "What... happened?" she said, panting slightly. Hāmonī turned to Koga, who shook his head, a grim expression on his face. "Let's get out of here first. I'll tell you then.

  Hāmonī couldn't help but shiver as a feeling of dread crawled up her spine.

I got the time to finish this chapter up, and with only one chapter left, this book will end soon. I can hardly believe it!
