After a fast breakfast, Knowledge teaches me and Katie how to do the paperwork. Katie whines her way through it and eventually, knowledge has Bruce take her place. Paperwork was never her strong spot. Instead, Knowledge has her take out weeds outside. After an hour, bruce drops out reluctantly. Knowledge scolds him for messing up one problem.
"Ill feed the horses," He says, glad of the chance to leave.Sweat drips down my neck, as I focus on my paper. theres a good stack of about twenty long pieces of paper, including division, stocking, stupid unnecessary numbers. I think. Three more hours and I've finished half of the papers. I see everyone sitting outside on their horses. Katie walks in on me, still doing paperwork.
"Hey," She says. "we are excersizing the horses. You in?" I bite the eraser on the pencil, trying to block out her voice.
"Scarlet. . .?"
Oh great, so theres one more step to this problem. Why would someone even bother doing this job if its as boring as this.
"Scarlet,"
"What is it!?" I yell. I gasp and take my words back.
"Im sorry," I say, a little more soft. "I can't go." I sigh and rub my forehead, trying to give her a small smile.
"You sure?" She coaxes. "Take a break?" She looks at my papers and shudders.
"Yeah, Im sure. Thanks."
"Sure. . ."
She runs back outside. I watch her through the window and refrain from snapping my pencil. I wanted to go, but Knowledge is depending on me. And I'm far too stubborn to admit that this is too much for me to take care of. I relentlessly push on.
After what is about an hour, Katie comes in again.
"Scarlet," She says. "you have to stop now. Time for training." With just one paper left, I get up. When I close my eyes, I see numbers and equations. I sigh and rub my eyes.
"I'm not even that mad," I mumble. We walk outside to see everyone in a horizontal line.
"We are to work on your upper arm strength," Knowledge says, Once I get into line. "by the way, Scarlet," She says. She peers at me and offers a slight smile. "I won't be using your help anymore. Ive seen you working and decided its far too much for one person, let alone a child to handle. Thank you, however."
Anger flares through me like a torch. Was I not fast enough? Did I mess up? What did I do?
"But. . ." I begin. I change my tactic.
"I found your paperwork very easy, actually." Her eyes widen and I allow a small smile. "Its just that, with the distractions. . ." I look around at Katie and Bruce. "I couldn't concentrate." The reality of what I just said kicks in. Im screwed.
"SO you are saying you can continue?" She laughs.
"Its just too easy," I say.
"Fine. Continue, then. Will fifteen papers a day be enough to satisfy?"
I wish I could just leave it at what it is. But I've always been known as a hot tempered brat who always has something to prove.
"Twenty, seems excellent."
"One policy, Scarlet," She smiles an almost evil looking smile. I want to shiver, but I resist the temptation of doing so.
"My work policy. . . you ask for the work, you complete it. No matter what."
"Of course."
"Pushups," She commands, after a moment of silence. "Now. Go!"
We begin.
