Twenty-one

"Food!" Bruce says, his voice muffled with bread in his mouth. We sit at the table eating dinner, laughing at each others stories, relating on how sore we are. Talking about how much we never want to go outside again. Or at least everyone else is. I cant help but think of what Knowledge said. To not use magic anymore, that I endanger the mission. Sometimes you just want to bury yourself in a hole, this is one of those days, I guess. 

"Do you miss him already?" Abbey pokes me. I look at her sideways. 

"Oh, you mean Grey?" Knowledge and him went outside to talk. Bruce wanted to go with them, but Knowledge wound up nearly kicking him back inside the house. 

"Who else would you miss?" She says. 

"Scarlet?" Katie says. "Are you alright? You seem quiet, of late." 

"Im fine," I say. "Ive just really been thinking. We sure had a hectic week, didn't we?" 

"To say the least," Ben says, as he stuffs some peas into his mouth. I allow myself to look under the table, his arms are locked with Katie's, his knuckles white from squeezing so hard. Katie catches me looking and starts blushing. 

"Guys," Katie says. "some of you may have noticed by now, but me and Ben . . ." He looks at Ben and he smiles, giving her a little nod. 

"Tell them, love," He says. I gape at them. If Katie says she is getting marries or something, I'm sorry but I will slap her across the face.  

"We are. . ." 

Katie begins. They smile at each other in a way that makes me sick. 

"Dating!" They yell together. My jaw drops onto the floor and I stare at them. I just cannot comprehend what is going on. Them two? They are actually in love. A bit of motherly sorrow and pride goes through me, 

"Oh, I'm so proud," I say, once the clapping stops. Everyone looks at me. Before I know it, I'm wiping a tear away. "of course, you'll need to get a good job Ben, and support her well. Katie, I expect you to work harder on those cooking skills, you've always burned everything, and you'll have to work harder than ever, especially if you want to support the children, which I assume you'll have many of."  They look at me, like I just said something out of the ordinary. Did I? 

"Scarlet!" Katie yells, her face flushed crimson. "He didn't propose or anything! Take it one step at a time before you think of marriage! We entered an official relationship, it would be a while before we considered having. . . ki. . ." She swallows. "You get the point." She finishes her rant lamely. The realization of what I just said hits me, I blush and stand up in my chair, knocking it over. 

"Oh, no, no , no! See, I was thinking ahead, you know me, the over thinker! Haha!"  I shake my hands, until everyone one begins to laugh. I cant tell who's blushing more, Me, or Katie.  

"After we finish congratulating the couple, Bruce starts up a conversation I'm not sure I want to hear.

"Scarlet used some crazy magic!" He yells. "She saved Knowledge with this. . . hurricane of wind, and it just went BOOM, and knocked me off my feet. Knowledge had to use this circle forcefield to protect us, and then Grey came, because she was just that buff! Pretty cool, huh?" 

Hy heart thuds and I look at my friends Katie, Abbey, and Ben, stare at me. I smile nervously. They probably will accuse me of trying to cover it up, though till a few days ago, I had literally no idea how to do anything. 

Katie opens her mouth. 

"You. . ." She says, her voice low. 

I look down at my boots.
