Throwing up in the middle of the kitchen might not have been my finest moment, but it definitely wasn't my worst either. I apologized profusely to Kara and Brandon for having to watch that happen and then cleaned it up. Kara told me that it wasn't the worst response she had witnessed. Apparently last year Preston had passed out, hit his head on the counter and had to be taken to the hospital.
Kara and Brandon also said they wouldn't tell anyone which made me feel a million times better about the situation. It was almost nine o'clock when people finally started to leave Rob's house. Brandon offered to give me a ride home because apparently Kara and I lived on the same street. I gladly accepted, seeing as I had no other way to get home. Before we left however, I wanted to find Side.
I walked through the house and finally found him in what looked to be an office. He was sitting in a beanbag chair, staring out a window.
"Side-" I began.
He cut me off, "Albi. Call me Albi."
"Albi?" I asked confused.
I sat in the chair at the computer desk. "That's my name," he said.
This made sense, although it hadn't really occurred to me that Side wasn't actually his real name. "I like it."
There was a dead silence as he stared out the window and I looked at him. "Albi, why haven't you talked to me today?" I asked. I pushed the tears that were coming to my eyes down. I was not going to cry. I wasn't weak.
He met my question with silence.
"Side!" I pleaded and my voice came out strangled with my tears. I didn't understand what was wrong. What had I done? It wasn't my fault that I wasn't in his group.
He continued to ignore me. I wanted to lunge at him, force him to speak or at least look at me.
"Albi," I said once more. It was quiet and pathetic. My last try to get him to acknowledge me. He sat there like a statue, unblinking. Then a flicker of movement on his cheek as a tear fell from his eye. His hand jumped up quickly to brush it away. As he moved, I stood and ran from the room. My head bowed, I found the door and left this wretched house. I made it to the side of the house before I slumped against the wall and let my emotions take over.
I felt someone lean against the wall next to me.
"Luna," said the person. I expected it to be Kara, but this was a guy's voice. I looked to my left and saw a man with dark features beside me.
"I'm Speedy, if you didn't remember. You can call me Lucas if you want actually."
I nodded and tried to wipe the tears from my face. This was getting higher and higher on the scale of most embarrassing days of my life.
"I'm sorry that Sidearms can be such a bitch sometimes. Wait, no, sorry, I probably shouldn't use that word. Retard. No, that's probably worse. Umm...dick? No. Well, whatever. Sidearms is probably the worst person ever sometimes. Believe me, I talk from experience."
I had started giggling as Speedy looked for the right word to describe Side. Now my smile faded and I said, "I'm sorry that I'm such a wimp. I normally don't cry this much, but this weekend has just been a rollercoaster of emotions."
"Don't apologize. Emotions, feelings, you can't control them no matter what you do."
"That's my problem," I hesitated slightly, then decided I could probably trust this guy. "I can't control my feelings for Albi. We were good and something was starting between us and then it was like 'poof,' and now he's distant and ignoring me completely and I just have no idea what to think."
"Well first of all, he told you his real name, which is a really good sign because he only tells his friends. I'm pretty sure that only The Crew and maybe Kara know his name. Even to the school he's Sidearms. Secondly, he didn't tell you about the rule?"
"What rule? He hasn't spoken to me since I was put in HTM."
"Oh. Well. There's this rule in the group that you can't be in a relationship with someone who's not in your group because of the whole killing thing when we get into the game. The rule is in place so that it's fair."
"So Albi knew that we wouldn't be able to be together if we were in separate groups. That's why he was so sad. That's why he's been so distant since then. I have to talk to him. Tell him that I know why he's so sad." I began to rise, but Speedy grabbed my arm. His grip was tight and slightly painful, like he didn't know his own strength.
"No," he said sternly. "Give him time and let him come to you. I'll tell him that I told you everything and he can work out his own problems. You can't be distracted by him, understand?" He now was holding both my arms and his eyes were set in a scary seriousness. I was slightly frightened by it. "You need to prepare for H3M. I promised Albi that I would make sure that you would not die and I plan to keep that promise." He took a pen from his pocket and scribbled two phone numbers on my palm. One had an "L" beside it and the other had an "A."
"This is my number and Albi's. Text me when you're free to train. Do not text or call Albi until he has reached out to you first. Give each other space and this entire thing will work itself out. Now go home and sleep if you can. I'll see you tomorrow morning in math!" With that he left me standing next to the house. I stared at the numbers on my palm then ran to meet Brandon and Kara at the car.
