Chapter Thirty-Four: Luna

Suddenly chaos erupted. My heart sped up as, at the last second, I looked up and saw Kara approaching Shadow with her sword raised to attack. When her sword pierced his back, my heart stopped.

Kara had betrayed our group.

Rob backed up quickly as Brandon and Kara advanced on him, apparently working together.

"No! Stop! Kara, Brandon, this isn't right!" Vikk yelled, taking a step forward. "What're you doing?"

Brandon turned on him, "Get back Vikk, I don't want to have to hurt you too."

I watched helplessly as Kara advanced on Rob and then swung the sword across his throat. I averted my gaze as Rob fell.

My eyes were still closed when I heard Kara say, "Don't try to follow us. Our mission was to kill the Smart group. Now that they're all dead we have no quarrel with any other group. Just leave us alone. It's now you against the peaceful group."

I kept my eyes tightly closed and my breathing shallow until I couldn't hear anything. If Kara really wanted to kill all of the Smart group, she must have thought I was dead. Or she had spared me.

Finally, I felt comfortable to move and opened my eyes to see Vikk and the man who had been kissing Shadow leaning over Shadow and giving him a healing potion. In front of my eyes, the blood leaking from his back ceased and Shadow's breathing slowed to a more even pace.

"Vikk!" I yelled and waved my arm to get his attention. He looked up, startled. When he saw me, he took another healing potion from the other man and ran over to Albi and myself.

"Is he still alive?" Vikk asked.

I checked his pulse and nodded. Vikk handed me the potion and I poured the pink liquid down Albi's throat.

"Who is that, with Shadow?" I asked Vikk.

"That's G18. He died last season and was from The Crew."

"I heard about him from Side," I said as I remembered how Albi had talked fondly of the boy. Albi had always complimented G for how smart and hardworking he had been and lamented over the fact that he was no longer around to help him with his math homework. I wondered why he would be on the Swords team if he were so smart. I guess it didn't matter now anyways. I didn't feel the same desire to kill Vikk that I had felt before when I had seen Brandon. It seemed as if Kara and Brandon's betrayal had lifted the enchantment.

Albi stirred in my arms and said my name softly as he looked into my eyes. I smiled and pressed my lips to his forehead.

"Looks as if he'll be okay," Vikk said. "I'm gonna go'n help G with Shadow, maybe take him to the sick bay."

"I think I'm just going to stay here with Side for right now. I hope Shadow will be okay."

Vikk began to walk away before I called out to him, "Vikk!"

"Yeah?"

"Who triggered the explosion? I mean, who's in the pit?"

"Oh," his face fell. "It's Preston."

Vikk returned to Shadow's side and then he and G lifted his motionless body and carried it towards a small building with banners over the windows.

"What happened Luna?" Albi asked.

"I don't even know where to start," I said with a sigh. I tried though. I talked about what had happened before we attacked and the change in Kara as well as explaining everything that had happened while he had been knocked out.

"So, Kara and Brandon are gone?" Albi finally summarized. He was now sitting and leaning on the building. My head was resting on his shoulder.

"I guess so. I can't believe this from them. It has to be the game, right? They wouldn't actually do this, right?"

"I don't know. I wouldn't think either of them capable, but I don't know them that well seeing as we were in different groups."

I started as I heard approaching footsteps. I boy appeared from out of a nearby mine, dragging his backpack at his side. He raised his head from watching his feet and noticed my stare. He stopped and dropped the bag unsheathing his sword.

"Albi, who's that?" I asked cautiously.

Albi looked up and then smiled. "It's D4." He slowly stood and strode towards him. Upon reaching each other, the two embraced and I decided to join them.

"Hey there," D4 said in a strong Southern drawl. "I would shake, but I'm dirty as fuck. Who're you?"

"I'm Luna. I joined this season."

"Why haven't I seen you? And where's everyone else Sidearms?" He looked around at the abandoned village before noticing the three bodies still present. "Oh shit. What the fuck happened?"

This time Albi explained the story and I filled in parts that he missed. Deluxe listened with his mouth slightly ajar.

"So we're just teamin' up now then?" He asked and I nodded.

"We should go check on Shadow," Albi said. "Make sure he'll be okay."

----

Deluxe and I stood outside as Albi went in because the building was too small to fit six people comfortably.

"So, you and Side are fuckin'?" D4 asked blatantly and my eyes widened in surprise.

"Excuse me?" I finally choked out.

"You two obviously got somethin' goin' for each other so I just figured you were fuckin'." He explained.

Albi pushed open the door before I could reply. "You can go in Luna. He's still asleep, but you can sit with him if you want."

I gave Deluxe one more glance before entering and heard Albi say to him, "D4, you don't just ask people that. But, of course we are."

My face flushed red at his response.

Shadow was tucked tightly into the bed, G's hand placed on his stomach. Vikk left, muttering something about burying the dead. I dragged a chair to the end of Shadow's bed and looked at G. Tears had left streaks on his cheeks and he was looking at Shadow's face with eyes I recognized as the ones Albi had when he looked at me. Eyes of pure love.

"He'll be okay then?" I asked.

"I think so." Now that I could hear it better, I realized that G's voice was beautiful. It was higher than a normal guy our age, but it suited his slight figure perfectly. I also noticed the dark shadows under his eyes which made it look like he hadn't slept in days. He was only fifteen, the same age as me, but he had been through so much more than I could imagine. I wanted to talk to him more. Tell him that everything would be better now, but I couldn't promise that. I also didn't get the chance.

There was a cry from outside that I couldn't decipher, then Albi burst through the door.

"Fire," he said out of breath. "We have to get out. Let's go." He grabbed my hand and began to pull me away.

"G. C'mon," I said.

He looked up at me with complete sorrow in his eyes, then returned his gaze to Shadow. I yanked my hand free from Albi's and ran to G18.

"You have to come," I was beginning to cry now too. This was unfair. This was so freaking unfair! Albi came and lifted G from his seat and hoisted him over his shoulder. The smaller boy struggled against Albi, but it was useless. I led the way through the door and saw the town crumbling around me. Smoke was thick on the air and I coughed violently. I led Albi slightly and we finally found Vikk and D4 waiting on the edge of the village.

"Where's Shadow?" Vikk asked.

Albi shook his head in response.

"We can go back..." D4 tried.

"No," Albi said sternly and I was surprised by the forcefulness of his voice which had never before been displayed. "You'll just be killed. Let's get out of here."

With G still tossed over his shoulder, Albi led the way down the hill.
