I held the torch so that it caught on the brittle wood and a small flame began to burn across its surface. I moved around the outer edge of the town, doing the same to the other buildings until I ran into Choco coming from the other direction. We stepped back and watched the fire slowly spread through the homes.
"We have to go meet up with the others and try to find where the Swords come out," Choco said and I followed him to the bottom of the hill where the rest of our group had gathered.
"Has anyone seen anybody?" Joel asked the group.
No one seemed to have seen anything so we decided to scan the edge. The village was almost completely burned down so it was hard to believe that anyone was still in there. I lagged behind the rest of the group and noticed a flicker of movement out of the corner of my eye. I spun around quickly and saw Shadow darting out from the building we had just passed.
What the hell was he doing in the Sword's camp? I thought. I decided to follow him without bothering to tell the rest of my group. I watched as Shadow ran to the bottom of the hill and looked back at the town and I sidestepped behind a building to avoid being seen. I poked my head out again and watched as Shadow began to stroll through a wide open plain. I followed at a safe distance and contemplated what to do.
I could attack him, but, even though he didn't look armed, Shadow was a better fighter than I was. Or I could just let him go and I would be safer. However, the pull in my gut made me want to attack him.
Just as I was speeding up, Shadow ducked into some tall wheatgrass and his head disappeared from view. I slowed and proceeded with caution, waiting for his dark haired head to reappear. Suddenly, something hard hit my right shoulder and I spun around, looking for my attacker. The grass shifted and I swung my sword at where it was swaying, but my blade hit only empty air.
I stopped moving and watched the grass for more movement. I turned in a circle slowly and peered into the grass, halting when I noticed a pair of green eyes staring out from the weeds.
"Shadow," I said.
"Don't hurt me and I won't hurt you," he replied.
"Deal."
Shadow stepped out from the grass and approached me cautiously. He stopped a few yards away and eyed my sword warily. I sheathed it to make him feel more comfortable and he noticable relaxed.
"Why don't you want to kill me right now? I'm having to fight every bone in my body to not plunge my sword into your stomach." I asked.
"To tell you the truth, I have no fucking clue what's going on right now. One second I was being stabbed in the back and the next I woke up in a building that was burning down around me." He answered, shrugging his shoulders.
"So you don't know where the rest of your group is?" I asked.
"No clue. Seems as if whoever tried to save me from the stab wound forgot about me."
"That's probably our fault. We were the ones to set fire to the Sword's camp. We didn't think that the Smarts group would be there too. You are in Smarts right?"
"I am. We were attacking Swords. Kara's idea. Actually," he paused in thought. "I never saw Kara throughout the entire fight. I wonder what happened to her?"
I didn't know what to say.
"Oh, Speedy," a flicker of excitement flashed through Shadow.
"What?"
"G's back. He's alive and on the Sword's team." As fast as the excitement came over him, his face fell again and he angrily said, "Fuck! What if he's dead? Speedy, he can't be dead. I can't lose him again."
I rushed forward and hugged Shadow tightly as he sunk to his knees in despair. This was only the second time that Shadow had let his guard down and I wasn't used to seeing him so emotional. The news that G was alive was a surprise to me. I should have expected it more because D20 and Deluxe were alive. It sort of hurt to realize that with the return of G came the end of any hope for Shadow and I.
"It's okay Shadow. I don't think he's dead."
I consoled Shadow for only a few more minutes before he regained his composure and stood up. "You should go and reunite with your group and I with mine."
"Let's go together. If I could fight the urge to kill you, maybe we can convince the groups to not kill each other. Maybe we can stop this game." I hoped that my plan could become a reality. It was true that I was able to fight the desire to kill Shadow. Now I didn't have to even fight my body anymore. I just couldn't kill him because he was my friend.
