Chapter Twenty-One: Luna

I felt cold stone under my hands. My eyes fluttered open and the piercing glare of the sun met my vision. I turned my head to the right and shut my eyes tightly to block out the glare. I opened my eyes again and jumped back in surprise as I looked into the staring eyes of a zombie laying beside me.

"Luna! You're awake," the voice was familiar, yet it took me a moment to realize it was Kara. I looked up to see her standing over me with her hand extended to help me up. I graciously took her hand and pulled myself to my feet. I brushed flecks of dirt from my clothes and found that I was wearing comfortably fitting black jeans and a jacket similar to the one Katniss wore in the Hunger Games. Running down the sleeves of my jacket were purple lines. I noticed that Kara was wearing similar attire.

"Is this it?" I asked. "Are we in H3M?"

Kara nodded gravely and handed me a backpack. "It's empty for now, but you'll want it later. And yeah, this is H3M. We just have a slight problem. I don't know where the four guys are."

I looked around to find that Kara and I were standing in a village. "Have you looked around at all?"

"Not really. There doesn't seem to be any villagers which is unusual and makes this place pretty useless except for shelter for tonight. I'm worried though. Last year our whole group spawned together."

"Well it wouldn't hurt to have a look around. Maybe they're in one of these houses or something." Kara and I proceeded to check the houses. We only found a carrot and wheat farm which we harvested, but there was no sign of Kenny, Brandon, Choco or Mat.

Night was starting to fall so we took shelter in one of the buildings and had a meager dinner of one carrot each. I tried to speak to Kara, but she didn't seem to be in the mood for conversation. Unlike me, she hadn't expected to be separated from her boyfriend, unaware of if he was still alive. Eventually I gave up and leaned against the wall, closing my eyes and letting my thoughts wander to Albi.

My heart already throbbed to lay my eyes on him, but I mentally scolded myself. You don't want to see him Luna, because if you do then you'll have to kill him.

I was yanked from my thoughts at the faint sound of voices. I jumped up and Kara did the same.

"Did you hear that?" she asked fearfully, but I could see the hope that it was Brandon in her eyes.

"Yeah. Could it be-" I whispered.

Suddenly the voices stopped. I crept to the window and peered through the glass. Two figures were approaching the village. In the dim moonlight I could only make out their silhouettes. I watched until the light of a torch illuminated their features. I turned and grinned at Kara.

"It's Brandon and Mat." I said.

Kara threw open the door and sprinted towards the figures. I watched as Kara jumped into Brandon's arms. He stumbled back, but quickly regained his balance and spun her around, hugging her tightly. Mat sheathed the wooden sword he had drawn as I joined the three of them on the gravel path.

Mat pulled me into a tight hug. Surprised, it took me a second to reciprocate. This was not the usual greeting I received upon seeing him.

"Where were you guys?" I questioned when Mat released me. I looked to him and noticed a slight pink spread across his cheeks.

"We spawned about a mile away in a forest over there." Brandon gestured behind him in the direction they had come. "Where are Kenny and Choco?"

"We don't know. We spawned here in the village." Kara answered.

As Kara finished speaking, Mat once again unsheathed his sword, "Luna, behind you!" he yelled and lunged towards me. I stumbled out of his way as he ran towards the zombie and sliced its head clean off its shoulders.

I caught my breath, "thanks."

"We should get inside," Kara said. "It's too dangerous out here with no armor or anything. We can go looking for the others in the morning.

"Good idea," said Brandon.
