It turned out that Kara only lived two houses down from me, which was extremely convenient. When I got home, my mom seemed to be strangely chill about the whole "being away the entire weekend" thing.
"How was your weekend, honey?" she asked when I found her watching Game of Thrones in the living room.
"Good. Although I am a little sad you started Game of Thrones without me," I said as I grabbed a water from the fridge and took a large swig from the bottle. I hadn't realized how thirsty crying made you.
"I didn't know when you'd be home. I can restart it if you want."
"No, it's okay. I'll just watch it tomorrow morning before school. I'm pretty tired anyways."
"Well, goodnight then sweetie." She kissed my cheek before I headed upstairs.
Once I was in bed I created contacts for Lucas and Albi. Although Lucas's advice not to call Albi made sense, I felt like I should call him anyways. Even if it was against the so called "rule" for us to be in a relationship, I still wanted to be friends with him. Yet at the same time, I wasn't sure if I wanted to be friends with him anymore. If he hadn't been able to tell me, or didn't want to tell me this one thing, what else wouldn't he tell me? And what if it was something that was really important? I wasn't sure if I wanted to be friends with someone that I couldn't completely trust.
As I stared at my phone, contemplating what I should do, it suddenly lit up. I waited until the third ring to pick up in an attempt to gather my thoughts first.
"Hello?" I said.
"Luna! Thank god you picked up. It's me, Albi."
"I know," I said, containing all my emotions and keeping my voice level.
"I want to talk to you. Can we... um... meet somewhere or something?"
This was not what I was expecting. "Umm. Sure, I guess."
"Great. My mom can drive me to your place if that's okay with you. I just need your address."
"Sure. Yeah, that's okay." I gave him the address that I had just recently memorized.
"Okay then. See you soon."
What had I just agreed to?! I wanted to slap myself. I hadn't even asked my mom, my room was a mess, I wasn't even dressed. I wasn't even dressed! I scrambled out of bed and pulled on the clothes I had been wearing earlier. I threw all my loose clothes into my laundry basket and stuffed it into the closet. I was in the process of making my bed when the doorbell rang.
"Got it Mom!" I yelled as I sprinted down half the stairs, then slowed my pace as I came into view of the door.
I opened the door to see Albi with a huge goofy smile on his face. He looked so adorable that I couldn't help smiling at the sight of him.
"Hey," we said at the same time, which made us both start laughing. Then Albi's face fell as his eyes drifted to behind me. I turned around to see my dad standing over my shoulder. He must have gotten home while I was upstairs.
"And who is this, Luna?" he asked. My dad was normally one of the nicest people I knew. However I had never had a boyfriend, let alone guys coming to our house at ten p.m. I also could tell that he was putting on the "scary dad going to scare away boys so they never take my daughter away" act.
"This is A-" I began, but Albi cut me off.
"I'm Side, a friend of Luna's. We were hanging out this weekend." He said, extending his hand, which my dad shook.
"Well, you seem like a decent young man, Side. I'll leave you two to talk." And with that, he just left. Why were my parents so chill about all this stuff relating to the groups?
"Should I come in?" asked Albi.
"Um... actually, let's go for a walk instead." I shut the door behind me and started to walk down the street. It was a warm California August night so the air was thick with humidity and little summer flies.
"Sorry I forgot about the name thing," I said.
"It's okay. Wait, how did you know?"
"Lucas told me. He also told me about the rule about the dating thing." We had reached a small park and we decided to sit at a lamplit bench.
"I'm so sorry Luna," Albi looked at me as he spoke. "I should have told you about it. I have no excuse as to why I didn't. I don't know what I was thinking when I totally ignored you earlier. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure if I was thinking. I don't know if I deserve your forgiveness, but I hope that you'll give it to me."
"I forgive you Albi. I just... I don't know if I can trust you to tell me about things that are kinda important. Like this whole obstacle."
"What? This stupid rule? I don't give a fuck about the rule." He leaned forward and pressed his lips to mine. I almost pulled away, but Albi put his hands on the side of my head and deepened the kiss. I closed my eyes, no longer resisting, and tried my best to not fail miserably.
Far too soon, he pulled away. "I'm sorry if I'm a terrible kisser," he said. "I've never kissed anyone before."
I shook my head. "That was great, I guess. I mean, I've never kissed anyone before either." We both laughed a little and then Albi noticed that I was shivering a little despite the warm happy feeling that had come over me.
"Come on," he said. "I'll walk you back to your house."
As we walked home with our fingers intertwined I voiced my earlier concern over my parents, "My parents seem strangely okay with me being away the whole weekend and then my dad just sort of let me go out at night with a guy he had never met before. He would not normally let me do that.
"Oh, that has something to do with the group. I think it's some way to get our parents to be okay with the fact that their kids are risking their lives. Anytime you talk to your parents about anyone in the group, they just go dumb and let you do whatever you want. Um... they also, like if you die in the game, they forget about you entirely."
I stopped and stared at him incredulously.
"It's like you never existed. The only people that remember you are the rest of us. Believe me, it totally sucks, but you do get used to it."
After everything that I'd found out about today, this didn't surprise me that much. It did scare me that everything I had accomplished in my life would just be gone in the blink of an eye. However, instead of scaring me, this fear only made me more determined to be ready for this December.
