I watched Side basically float up his front steps, he was so happy. Maybe I had been wrong yesterday when I told him he wasn't in love. What did I really know about love anyways when mine could never be? As I thought, I began to absentmindedly stare at Speedy.
"What?" he asked, a hint of laughter in his voice.
"Nothing," I answered quickly. "I was just thinking."
"You really need to stop doing that dude. It's kinda creepy. Your eyes get all glazed over and then you're just staring without blinking." He shivered slightly.
I took advantage of the situation. "Maybe I'm an alien lifeform from Mars and everytime I stare like that I'm actually analyzing your internal organs to see how you can survive on this planet." We both laughed and then Speedy made a seriously low-blow;
"Have I finally discovered the true reason as to why you're senioritis is so bad and you didn't even show up to school on the first fucking day of school?"
I was totally stunned by this question coming from Speedy. He had tried to hide the seriousness of the question behind a joke, but it hit me like a fastball to the gut. So my natural answer was, "What the hell man?"
"Shadow, you almost failed three out of six classes last year! The only reason you scraped by was because of G and he's not here to help you anymore! I don't blame you for last year, but all of us lost our friends and I don't have the time to help you because of the advanced classes I'm taking, as well as basketball every night. You have to help yourself, man. College is important and I want you to have a fighting chance of getting into one." He didn't say this angrily, but I could hear the disappointment in his voice.
However, he didn't really understand the extent to which last season had affected me...
[FLASHBACK TO H2M]
I was brewing health potions when a pair of skinny arms wrapped themselves around my waist. I could feel warm breath on the back of my neck for just a second before the door burst open and the arms pulled away hurriedly. Deluxe 4 stopped in the doorway and looked at us. He either didn't notice our guilty looks or didn't have the time to question us about them.
"Quick, in the hole. They found our house." he was red and out of breath from running. I remember freezing in fear at the realization that death could be at my doorstep any minute. However, his strong arm pulled me towards the hole and D4 followed us closely. As we began to descend the ladder, the door shook as someone tried to get in.
"It might be D20," said Deluxe with slight hope in his voice.
I was able to pull myself out of my frozen state of shock long enough to say, "No Deluxe. We can't let anyone know we're in here or we're dead. D20 will find somewhere else to go to hide."
"He's my brother feller. I won't be able to live with myself if it's him at that door and he dies because of me." I watched as Deluxe climbed the ladder. I will never be able to stop blaming myself for not trying harder to keep him from going up that ladder, although I knew that there would be no way to stop him.
We reached the bottom of the hole just as a heart wrenching scream came from above. I felt my heart drop as I heard the final noise that D4 would make. There was a strangled noise from next to me and I hugged him to give him the strength to continue. We weren't safe yet because D4 had forgotten to disguise our escape route. It was now me leading him to the nether portal at the end of a long stone tunnel. I began to sprint when I heard water being placed in the hole behind us. As I ran I prayed that the hallway would be faster to run than their waterfall would be to fall down. I had my diamond pick in hand, ready to break the portal once we were through.
Finally, we jumped into the obsidian portal and as the room began to waver and fade I saw Vikk raise his bow and take aim.
And shoot.
As soon as I spawned in the nether I went to work at the obsidian which broke under my pick. I turned to look at him with relief, only to find that he was closing the door to the little outpost I had made. I was confused so I followed him into the one room fort. I opened the door to find him leaning against a chest, with his hand wrapped around an arrow protruding from his stomach.
I gasped and ran to his side. He slumped into my embrace and I held his hand tightly. I would never let go.
"Shadow," he managed painfully. "I don-don't want t-to die."
"You won't, I promise," I choked out, tears falling down my face as I stroked the hair out of his face.
"You don't ha-have to lie t-to me." He smiled slightly and coughed. Blood was on his hand when he pulled it away from his mouth. He took a raspy breath, "I lo-love you Shadow."
"I love you to," I whimpered.
He smiled at me as his grip loosened on my hand and his eyes glazed over. I shook him gently.
"No," I said. "No, no you can't leave me. Stay with me." His eyes stared into my face, but I knew that he could not see it anymore. I wept over his body, rocking it back and forth in my arms.
I whispered one last thing into his unhearing ear.
"You are the love of my life and no one will ever replace you, G18."
