Vikk decided to spend the night at my place to make it easier to get to school since I usually picked him up anyways. I guess it was fate that he didn't need a ride on the Friday that I met Luna. When I was chosen to be the leader of The Pack by the "unseen gods of the game" as I like to call 'em, Rob was pretty pissed since he is the oldest. However, being the leader only meant that I could see who belonged in the game. When I saw Luna in the quad, she had a faint glow to her that I can't really explain. So, obviously I had to bump into her and break her phone in the process. Well, maybe breaking her phone wasn't in the plan. Either way it worked out great. I wasn't too salty about her not being in The Pack because I thought HTM would be a great fit for her.
I glanced at Vikk in the passenger seat as we drove to school. He seemed kind of distant lately, like he wasn't really there when we were together. Last night, when I had tried to kiss him, he had flinched away and then locked himself in the guest room. Now seemed like as good a time as any to ask him what was wrong.
"What's goin' on Vikk?" I asked.
"What d'ya mean?" His words were running together, which only happened when he was nervous.
"You've been distant, Vikk. Did I do something?"
"No, no, no. It's not you, I've just..." he trailed off.
"You've just what?"
"I feel like it's wrong."
"What's wrong?" I was totally confused now.
"It's just not fair that we get to be together and Luna and Side don't."
"What? Luna and Side are a thing?" This was news to me.
Vikk looked at me like I was crazy, "Yeah, mate. How'd you not notice?"
"I guess I'm just not observant. I'm relieved that that's it though. I was worried that I had done something."
"But, don't you feel like it's unfair? Like, just because we think the same way, we can be together while they aren't allowed."
"I guess, but that's just life. Sometimes it's unfair." I shrugged. We had arrived at school so we grabbed our bags and headed to AP English, our first class. We clasped hands as we walked. When we had gotten together a year ago, we decided that we didn't care about what other people thought. We had also learned that people didn't care that much that we were together. If anything, people encouraged our relationship and were happy that we were so open.
"I want to call a meeting about it for next weekend. We don't have to mention exact people unless they want to come forward, but I want to bring the topic up. Can you call the meeting Lachlan?" Asked Vikk hopefully.
"Of course I will. I want them to be just as happy as we are. I just don't know if it will change anything so I wouldn't get your hopes up." I squeezed his hand gently.
"Don't worry, they're already pretty low." he answered sadly.
[TIME SKIP TO MEETING]
I sat eagerly in one of the library's conference rooms where myself and the other group leaders had decided to meet upon my request last minute. The door opened and Kara and Kenny entered. Although Kenny was technically the leader of HTM, all three groups had decided to let Kara be a part of the decision-making so that a girl's opinion could be given on situations. Kara took a seat across from me and Kenny sat beside her and pulled out a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Kara looked at me. I hadn't told anyone why I had called this meeting, but I got the feeling Kara had a pretty good idea of why we were here.
We sat in silence as we waited for Joel. Finally he arrived holding his bought lunch containing a slice of pizza and a bag of cheetos. Once Joel had settled himself in the chair adjacent to mine, I began to speak, "Okay, so the reason we're here is discuss relationships. It's come to my attention that the rule regarding whom can be in a relationship with whom is very limiting. Therefore, I'd like to have a talk about that and possibly changing it so that it's more lenient or something."
"Well who's the rule affecting? You get to be with Vikk and Kara gets to be with Brandon." questioned Joel.
I was a little surprised that Joel had no idea about Side and Luna. Maybe The Crew isn't as close as The Pack is. We tell each other everything.
Kara was a much quicker thinker than I was, "It's just for the future. We don't want anyone that has feelings for someone in another group to be unhappy."
"But it's not like the rule is there just for the hell of it. It's to make sure the game's fair. We're all risking our lives. You guys know how it feels when you go in there." Kenny paused to look around the room at us. "It's like you're not even you. When you see someone that's not in your group you feel like you need to kill them and you can't stop yourself. The only feeling that's greater than that desire to kill is love. That's why we have the rule. If we didn't the game would be unfair."
I looked down at the pencil I was spinning around my fingers. Kenny had a point that I couldn't argue with. However Kara was not going to give up that easily, "But think about it Kenny. What if you met a girl and you maybe wanted to go somewhere with her, but then she gets put in The Pack. Would you just forget about your feelings for her entirely and never wonder what could have happened?"
"Yes because that's what I'm expected to do as a member of HTM. Maybe I'd think about what could have happened, but it wouldn't have happened so it doesn't matter." He replied sternly.
Before this argument could escalate, I intervened, "Well I think we've heard good ideas for both sides so let's take a vote. Those in favor of keeping the rule," I paused and looked around. I stood up as the bell rang indicating the end of lunch. "Thanks for coming guys."
Everyone filed from the room, Kara slammed the door behind her and I sighed. It was going to be hard telling Vikk that there wasn't going to be a change and even harder to tell him that it was because of me.
