"I'm guessing you heard about the so called "superheroes"," Pete says.

I knew this would come out eventually. He can't suspect a thing when we talk about this.

"How could I not?" I say. "They're all over the place." The wind blows the smell of flowers and fresh grass. The trees shake and shed beautiful leaves that flow around into the grass and on the sidewalk.

"I think it's a big scam," he says.

"Why do you think that?" I pull my hair behind my ears because it keeps blowing in my face.

"Do you really think it happened?" he says. "We don't need some people with powers coming to save us. That's what the police are for."

"Maybe they can do some good," I add. He looks at me like I'm stupid.

"Heroes bring villains. Villains bring chaos. Chaos brings the end of the world. The end of the world brings-"

"I get it," I intervene. "This can do us some good. Villains are made to be defeated."

"Villains are made to bring trouble. Heroes bring that trouble," he complains.

"Who makes you the expert?" Now I am offended.

"I'm not an expert. It's common sense. Anyone can see that."

Villains were going to be here with heroes or no heroes. If it weren't for us, the world would already be totaled or it would have been on it's way to be. The world needs us, like it or not.

Jack and Raven come into point of view. "Where were you?" Jack askes, clearly mad about my absence.

"Yeah, where were you?" Raven says with attitude. "We got caught by the cops last night if you should know."

"Aww, man. That's a shame," I say, snapping one finger like I care. "Sucks doesn't it?" I can see them in separate interrogation rooms, suffering from the silence and inhaling old coffee and metal.

"We were there all night," Jack complains. "I thought we were in this together."

"I'm not really wanting to paint right now," I admit. "I have a lot going on."

"You weren't the only one who lost your dorm," Raven sasses. "I have to stay with Jack in his dorm and it's just a matter of time before I get caught." They should be happy. They can fuck anytime they want to.

You barely can make out Raven's blue eyes behind the thick eyeliner she puts on. Her hair is braided with the black locks being down, the tips blue. Jack's hair is spiked up with so much gel creating a spikey mohawk.

"And that's my problem?" I say.

"What the fuck happened to you?" she scoffs.

"Growing up," I answer.

"Have fun hanging out with this dork," Jack says, referring to Pete.

They push past us, bumping shoulders with me. I don't say a word to them. I'm only relieved they got a taste of their own medicine. I have to give it all to Landon. He's the one who kept me back and drew on the guilt trip if I did go.

"Did I hear that right? Rowen Thompson didn't show up to go spray paint?" Pete says.

"You heard it right my friend. You heard it right."

At training, the trainers announced we are doing the boxing match which I wasn't pleased to hear. We go against the other teams as usual. If we compete, shouldn't we get a prize or something? Sharden is one of the first ones up there.
