By the time I'd managed to run all the way back home, my throat was overwhelmed with a burning sensation, and my eyes were only capable of seeing nothing more than the blurs of my surroundings.
I paced back and forth along the pavement outside of the gate leading to my house, taking deep breaths to compose myself. I wasn't sure what had become of me; never before had I been such an emotional wreck.Eventually, I worked up the courage to open the gate and enter the house, where I could faintly hear mother in discussion with another familiar voice.
"Sam? Is that you?" I heard her gasp as I closed the door behind me.
"Yes." I bit my lip as her flushed countenance appeared from the living room after dashing for the door to greet me.
Behind her nonchalantly followed the face of another. A kind and relieving face to see, bringing a warmness to my heart.
"Paul came around not long ago to see you, and he said he was willing to wait for you to return." She smiled slightly, gazing at him enchantingly, almost as much as I was. "But I'm glad you're okay honey. You had me worried sick when you took off this morning." She stepped closer to kiss my forehead lightly, holding my warm cheeks in her gentle palms.
"I'm fine mum, really." I cracked a weak smile, dabbing beneath my damp eyes as she held me to her chest. "Can I have a moment with Paul though please?"
She released me from her embrace to appease to my wishes, giving me an affirmative nod of the head before exiting, still reluctant to take her eyes off Paul as she passed.
"Sam." He smiled benevolently as she left, stepping forward to enclose me into his warm embrace.
"Paul." I croaked, burying my face into his shoulder to indulge in his tender touch.
He then pulled away, making me rigid, and held me by the shoulders to admire me sheepishly, before his sweet smile descended into a frown.
"You've been crying." He said, his doe eyes filled with empathy as he brushed his fingertips to my heated cheek. "Are you okay?"
I took his hands from my face and shoulder, clasping them between my own.
"I am now." I gazed down upon them, making the ends of his lips curl up into another smile, enlightening me.
"I need to talk to you Sam." He said softly, guiding me by our gently entwined fingers back into the living room, where he sat me down beside him. "It's important."
