"hey its ashton sorry i couldn't get to the phone right now, leave a message or whatever."

i angrily pressed the end button, getting ready to chuck my phone across the room but stopping myself once april stepped out of her bedroom, closing the door behind her. "is everything okay dad?"

"fine, what are you doing?"

"it's time for dinner." she shyly looked down, motioning to the clock on the wall and i nearly forgot. "i'm sorry sweetheart, i'll make you something what do you want?"

"i'll eat anything you make, you know that." she chuckled and i tiredly rubbed my hands over my face. i got up and walked towards the kitchen, seeing her sit down at the table behind me. i grabbed a pot from one of the cabinets and started to fill it with water. "mac n' cheese sound good?"

"perfect."

i smiled at her, setting the pot on the stove and turning on the burner, only to let out a screech as the flames bursted around the pot and around my hand. i jumped back, feeling tears well up in my eyes at the pain as i turned the sink on cold water and hovered my hand under it.

my eyes squeezed shut and there was a few rummaging sounds before someone tapped my jeans. i felt tears slide down my cheeks as i stared at april, her hands holding the first aid kit and i turned off the water.

the pain immediately drowned me as i sat down on the floor. she placed the first aid kit down in front of her and grabbed some bandages and ointment. "i can do it princess." my free hand went to take it from her but she shook her head and motioned for me to hold my hand out.

i did as told and watched her struggle with the cap to the ointment but got it off none of the less. she was quiet as she lazily spread it around my hand, wiping the excess off on her pants before picking up the bandage and starting to wrap it around my hand. it wasn't the best job, and i had to clip it in place but it was doable.

i thanked her quietly and cleaned up the kit before putting it back. i grabbed a box of mac n' cheese from the cabinet, seeing the water was starting to boil and adding in the small sponge bob shaped pieces. "do you think you can stir it for me?" i turned to april who was looking inside the fridge. "i'm too short for it."

"nonsense." i waved her off as i walked towards the closet in the hall and grabbed the step stool. we haven't used it in a while, normally to help april put ornaments on the christmas tree.  "here we are." i grinned, placing it down and she stepped on to it. i handed her a spoon and she started to stir. "how long do i do it for?"

"not forever, just make sure nothing sticks to the bottom of the pot." i leaned against the counter, watching her closely so she didn't get hurt. although when her arms started to get tired i took over, draining the water out once i was done and april questioned if i was a wizard when i was able to do it without a strainer. [i fucking slay at it]

"i'm just cool." i spoke, adding in butter and then the cheese. "milk please, do you remember what happened last time we made this without it?"

"don't remind me please." she handed me the carton and i poured a little bit in because this is mac n' cheese, not soup.

i grabbed a rag and two giant spoons, taking the pot with me to the table and laying it down on top of the rags so i didn't burn the table off. "your weapon of choice." i held up both spoons, one smaller than the other and it surprised me when she took the bigger one. "big mistake letting me choose first." she stuck her tongue out as she sat down across from me.

we started to eat out of the pot, my spoon purposely taking the food off of hers making her whine. "i think we're missing something."

she looked at me and i narrowed my eyes before both of us shouted. "chocolate milk!"

i quickly got up, getting two cups and pouring a fair amount of milk into both of them. i smiled, going to the pantry only to freeze in my spot when noticing the nesquik power was missing. "april?"

"don't say it!"

"we're out!"

"i said no!"

i walked back over to her, taking the two cups in the process and sadly putting them on the table. "regular milk is for babies." she huffed, stuffing another bite of mac n' cheese into her mouth.

"good thing i'm a baby." i grinned, taking a long sip from my cup and laughing when she looked at me in disgust.

"what's that supposed to mean?"

"it means you're better off alone calum."
