Jesse's P.O.V

I glance at the DJ and motion for him to start playing the music. In less than a minute, people have continued talking, dancing and laughing. All about Beth.

The butler, almost as crimson as the punch with embarrassment looks at me, mortified: The empty punch bowl rejected on the floor.

‘Mr. Phoenix, I sincerely apologize. I am so sorry, sir, so sorry if there’s anything I can do—’

I slap him on the shoulder, watching the elevator for any hope that Beth might just for some reason come back up. ‘Don’t worry, buddy. It’s all cool.’

Josh and Meg run up to me and Josh grips my shoulder. ‘That wasn’t ...Beth...was it?’ Josh asks.

I nod.

‘Oh, my God. I feel terrible.’ I hear a voice from behind me. I spin around, angrily and stalk up to Paris Noleman.

‘What the fuck did you tell her?!’ I shout.

‘What?’ she replies, putting on a clueless face, her blue eyes brimming with tears.

‘You heard me! What the hell did you tell Beth?! I saw you two talking and then she just left!’ I shout at her.

Paris cringes and her smile falters. ‘I was just telling her who all the people here were and their positions,’ she says. She smiles, reassuringly but somewhere in her big blue eyes, I can tell it’s a lie. She told Beth something to make her so mad.

‘Jesse, I think you should drop it. She doesn’t belong in our world...she’s just an ordinary street girl—’

I cut Paris off. I run away and slam the open button on the elevator. I storm in the oversized elevator and shut the door before anyone else could get into it. I notice a large patch of red punch and a few clumps of fruit lying by the back wall.

I pull my phone out of the breast pocket in my tuxedo blazer and text Beth.

Beth! Call me! Please don’t be mad! I don’t know what Paris said to you but I can almost promise you its not true! Please call me! Either your calling me or I’m coming to you.

I click send just as the doors are opening and I stream out of the elevator and into the lobby. Fans start to shriek as I walk out the front doors and I see my limo waiting expectantly at the foot of the steps and I pull open the door and slam it shut behind me.

‘To the Pier,’ I ask the driver and he pulls away. ‘Could you hurry, It’s kind of urgent.’

The chauffeur starts driving faster and he dodges regular traffic.

I wait in the backseat by myself and I open my contacts and I search for Pilar Houghs. Luckily, that day where Josh, Beth, Pilar and I had all gone down to the beach to get ice-cream from Freezies, Pilar had given me her number.

Hey, have you spoken to Beth? I  really need to talk to her

I click send and then text Josh. Tell Mom I won’t be home until late.
