Yu POV
All the squads started to meet up at the spot we had planned. So far only our group and another has come. The park we stood in was awfully quiet.
There was still vampires in this city, and if we're going to exterminate them, then we need to hurry. I sit down on a bench and sigh, rubbing the bridge of my nose. Shinoa walks over and sits beside me, crossing her legs.
"Already out of energy?" She asked with a grin.
"No... just a little edgy." I mumbled, looking up at the sky, the clouds were darkening, I think a storm was coming soon.
Waylon stood under a tree, leaning against it behind us. "That's the right way to be feeling. Can't be too careful." He said, looking over at us.
Mitsuba and Kimizuki both nodded, I notice this but everyone in our group seems to always take his word seriously, he is the more experienced one here after all. But even after all this time, he still hasn't told us exactly what happened on that mission he had before joining us.
Is it true he left his whole squad for dead to save himself? Or did he use them as bait to lure the nobles they were hunting out? Somehow I can't think of him doing anything like that. Waylon might not admit to it, but he's a nice guy.
Narumi stood a bit of ways away, staring over at me. I crook an eye brow at him, wondering what he's looking at me for. "Do I have something on my face?" I asked.
Narumi frowned. "I still don't think you kids are up to the task yet." He said, scratching his head. "But... you did good. For newbies."
Just then, a group came into the park, they looked tattered and beat up. Shinoa and me get up, walking over to greet them on their status.
"Did you succeed?" Shinoa asked, helping their leader keep their balance. The man nodded, clenching his side.
"But... I lost over half my men." He said. This sent a wave of despair through the crowd, everyone's face turned grim. I hate to admit it but so did mine.
"They heard that other nobles around the city were being hunted... they knew we were coming." The leader said, his voice sounding a bit hysterical.
"But you succeeded, right?" Said a voice behind me. I turn to see Waylon standing behind me and Shinoa, I didn't notice he had come with us.
The leader looked confused. "Y-Yes... but my squad-"
Waylon interrupted him. "Then there's nothing to worry about." He said.
What? Did he just say that? He's acting as if them dying had nothing to do with it! I felt steam building up in me but Shinoa held me back by my sleeve. She was smiling. "Just wait."
The leader grit his teeth and walked up to Waylon, grabbing his collar. "What the hell did you say? You saying as long as our mission is done, then it's fine?!" He yelled into his face.
Waylon had no reaction, his face was still blank, but after awhile he did speak. "One, your breath smells like shit. Two, get your hands off me before I cut them off." He said, still with the same face and voice.
The squad leader froze, partly from fear and partly from shock at what a lower rank was saying to him. Waylon grabbed the man's arms and pushed them aside, not hastily though, calmly.
"And you seem to have underestimated what I said." Waylon said, his eyes narrowing, he then pointed in the man's face. "What I'm saying is that your men didn't die for nothing. As long as your mission was complete, their deaths were not in vain." He said.
His words spread, and the squad leader couldn't speak. Waylon put his hand down, sighed, and walked away, back under his tree and sitting in the grass, leaning against it.
I couldn't be mad with the leader, I thought he was being a jackass too... but I forgot that Waylon had been in a similar situation. His squad died, and he still completed the mission, alone. Is that his way of thinking, that as long as he completed the mission their lives weren't in vain?
Another crowd comes into the park, this time everyone is up on their feet with grins. Guren had arrived, grinning himself. "Our mission was successful. Give me the casualty reports later. We're moving out to the town hall!" He said.
"Why? Isn't that where their headquarters are?" Said a soldier, sounding dubious.
Gurens smile disappeared. "They have taken prisoners, and are calling us out." He told everyone, making a wave of talk go over us.
"Prisoners?"
"What the hell-?!"
"Got to be kidding me!"
"We're so screwed."
I listen to all of them and frown. It was true, this was bad. But the last of the nobility should be in the town square, if we can save the prisoners and kill the nobles, then our mission will be complete.
"What is the plan, exactly?" Narumi asked, crossing his arms with a frown that seemed glued to his face.
Guren dusted himself off a bit more, and cleared his throat before stepping into the fountain bench, so he could get a look at everyone.
"Around a third of us have been killed. And another half of what remains is captured. Many of the people who are your friends and comrades are in there. I will give you a choice, either of them will not be judged.
"Your choices are to either leave, and head back to the city, and report that you escaped an ambush... or you can stay and fight for the lives of your comrades.
"Be warned. The second option, you have about a thirty percent chance of survival. There is a large number of vampires there, much larger than our unit right now. And powerful nobles stand at the top, commanding them."
Guren paused for a few moments, then closed his eyes. The quiet park had an odd feeling. No one moved a muscle.
Then he spoke. "Choose now... I will close my eyes, but when I open them... those who stand here will stay." He said, his voice traveling through the crowd. Still no one talked.
Guren closed his eyes tight, the crowd wavered for a moment. Now was the time to choose. I look over at the others, all around the tree where Waylon was before.
Kimizuki gave me a stern look, then shook his head, standing tall and not moving, like a steel tower. Yoichi sees this from him and puts on a brave front, standing straight yet strained.
Mitsuba put her hands on her hips and grinned, not moving either. Shinoa stayed, not changing her expression or posture. I slowly move my glance to Waylon, who is looking right at Guren.
He glances around, at us, and makes eye contact with me. A part of me can see that he wants us to leave, that we'd be safer if we left. But I stand right where I am, giving a smile.
Waylon sees this, and looks back at Guren, then sighs, and leans against his tree, staying also.
Guren opens his eyes. The crowd had not moved from their positions at all, all still standing, only changed by the nervousness of their actions. This made Guren laugh, letting out a chuckle.
"Your all idiots... alright..." he trailed off, looking towards town hall. "Lets move out!"
