Mia

I don't know what time it is. Hours have passed but I wasn't counting. The door clicks behind me as it closes. My eyes are hooded, exhausted. In a haze, I squint to figure out where exactly I am. It dawns on me that night has fallen, and my hotel room is completely drenched in darkness.

I stumble into the room and my hand quickly finds the light switch. However, as my hand presses over the button, I notice blood smear onto the plastic and drip down the white wall.

How did I get inside with no one noticing all the blood on me?

I find the bathroom and only when I enter it do I realize what I look like. My hands and the cuffs of my sleeves are completely drenched in scarlet blood. The putrid metal smell hits me, but I don't feel nauseous. Not like a normal person would.

"You smell." A hissing voice ran in my head. It wasn't my own.

I turn around and face my protector. My nen spirit.

He stands at the doorway of the bathroom. His face is indistinguishable, and his body transparent. This is my gift. My mother's gift to me.

My ability to communicate connect spirits is almost unheard of. A power that has been passed down my maternal family for generations. I never got to quite grasp the hows and whys, but my mother bestowed a protector to follow me whenever I was in need. A spirit from the afterlife which is able to materialize with my nen. Or so I understood.

"I know." I sigh and remove my dress. It drops to the floor with a heavy plop. Blood splatters onto the tiles. I don't care though. When I look up, the spirit is gone, having left me to my privacy. He never communicated much with me, to begin with.

When I was younger, I had so many questions for my spirits. However, I quickly realized that none of them had the ability to talk to me. Until one day I met my protector spirit. the one my mother bestowed onto me when I was a little older. Even though he could speak, he chose not to and ignored the majority of questions I asked him. Until I stopped asking. He spoke to me occasionally, like today, but it was never more than a few words.

It is only after I get out of the shower that I remember Illumi who is in the connecting room. He must be angry with me for leaving all day.

I step out of the shower and wrap a large towel around my small body. My hair is dripping wet as I pad my way over to the adjoining doors which connect my room to Illumi's.

I don't care if I am in a towel. Illumi has seen me like this before, and it never felt inappropriate. However, when I open the door I am not met with the black-haired man. In fact, I am met with no one.

Slowly, I enter Illumi's room which looks completely identical to my own. His bed is still perfectly folded and tucked tightly at the ends. The bathroom is completely untouched.

Where could he have run off to?

For a moment, I consider that he may have gone out to look for me but quickly realize that he probably couldn't care less where I was. He made that fact very clear before I left.

I steadily inch my way back to the adjoining doors. He probably left to go get food and will be back later. But before I make it to the door, my eyes land on something which makes my heart skip a beat.

The armrests of the nearest reading chair are completely torn apart at the ends. The exact place where someone's hands would rest is torn, and pieces. The white cushion flutters out from the rips which must have been made by someone gripping the chair tightly. Very tightly.

I wrap my arms around myself, suddenly feeling the cold hit my wet skin. Something about this was so unsettling.

Did Illumi do this?

I shake my head and turn around to go back to my room.

"Leaving so soon?" A voice calls out sweetly from right behind me.

I freeze. Not out of fear, but dread. Because I know exactly who that voice belongs to. I slowly turn my head to the side and my eyes meet the one and only clown's.

Hisoka.

"Hi~" His lips curl as he smiles widely.

"Where's Illumi?" I demand, pulling the towel more securely around my body. The prospect of wearing so little becomes intimidating all of a sudden.

Hisoka's grin widens ever so slightly at the action. "Well, you see. He left." Hisoka snickers, "And he's never ever coming back."
