The siblings stood in front of one another, frozen, without a word. One had crumbled to the ground due to the lack of energy she had. The other stood on his two feet staring at his sister with a hard and unreadable expression.
Mia huffed out a breath as she felt frustrated tears start to spring out of her eyes. "What is wrong with you, all of a sudden?" She shouted at him after the long moment of silence. He'd never acted this way towards her before. Or at least that is what she thought. The truth is that Mamoru had always felt this way.
Jealousy was an evil thing.
This jealousy that adored him so very much bloomed from the very lack of love and affection that his mother showed him when he was a child. To add on to that, Marla adored her second child, Mia, very much. She was much more affectionate and showed her love very openly for her first daughter. In the end, it wasn't hard to figure out why Mamoru was so jealous of his younger sister.
"I think I spoke to mother" Mia repeated for the second time after she realized that her brother probably would not give her a straight answer. This time she vacillatingly shifted into a sitting position on the dewy grass beneath her feet.
Mamoru noticed the lack of strength that his sister adorned and began to contemplate whether his hostile intents that he had plotted towards ger both now and in the past were irrational.
He reminded himself of all of the heart-breaking instances where he watched his mother spend time with his sister instead of him. The dreadful neglect that he felt created the jealousy that lived inside of him for years and just grew and grew over time. His breaking point being his mother's death when she requested only to see Mia before passing away. Mamoru gripped the knife in his hand tightly as the memories replayed in his mind.
Mamoru, his mother's sweet voice replayed in his mind, I love you.
At this point, he had not noticed the tears that began to stream down his face. His grip on the knife loosened before completely slipping out of his grasp.
No matter what the circumstances were, he, as the eldest sibling of the family, had the responsibility to take care of his family.
He slowly made his way towards his sister with long strides before seating himself on the wet grass right beside her.
"Tell me," He simply said.
Tell him. How could she even explain to him what she had seen? How do you explain to someone what it's like to almost die? The experience. The voice she heard.
The siblings had forgotten something though. They were being pursued. Before any more words could be shared between one another a loud booming could be heard in the near distance. Both heads snapped in its direction. Mamoru stiffened. It was coming from his house.
"What was that?" Mia's voice wavered weakly. The sound was followed by a powerful rumbling in the ground beneath them.
Mamoru quickly jumped up to his feet. "Quick, can you stand?" he blurted. clearly in a state of panic.
Mia looked down at her unmoving legs who lay limply at her side and shook her head, no. She had not realized that she had completely lost any feeling in them.
Mamoru swore under his breath. They were in the middle of a forest. Where could he hide her? He looked up.
"Your aura is very weak, so Takeo will have a very hard problem finding you if you stay quiet." He informed her as he scooped her up into his arms before making a big leap onto a tree that stood directly above them.
They landed on a thick branch that lay hidden to anyone on the ground below thanks to the abnormally large leaves that decorated the tree. Mamoru gently set his sister down on the branch.
He took a moment to observe his sister, before sighing deeply. "I am sorry for everything that I put you through. I failed you as an older brother. I was supposed to protect you but instead was the one who put you in danger," He apologized, "I'll be back, I promise, and when I return, everything will be back to normal. Just... stay here and wait for me."
Before Mia could even register anything, her brother was gone. So many thoughts were going through her head at the moment. About Mamoru, about Takeo and Illumi, about her father and mother.
Her mother. Marla.
Her own sweet mother who had been waking her every time she neared death. The beautiful angel that waited for her in heaven. Mia wanted more than anything to see her again. The idea had now been set in her mind and would stay there permanently. She wanted her mind, body, and soul to be set free one last time. To see her mother.
Holding the thought, she gripped the branch tightly and peered over the edge to catch a glimpse of the ground. Her idea had been set. Nothing could stop her.
She apologized to everyone who was fighting for her before closing her eyes and took a deep breath. Her lover's face appeared in her mind. The image of Illumi staring down at her the first time she passed out in the forest appeared. "I love you Illumi," she mumbled sadly, "but this is something that I have to do." She threw herself over the edge and braced herself.
Wait for me. Both her brother and Illumi spoke the same words in her mind. Those departing words replayed in her mind as she plummeted towards the ground. Towards her death.
