Mamoru(1st person)

After deciding that it was finally time to speak to my father, I left to a separate room in order to speak more privately. My sister lent me her phone so I was able to make the call to my disgraceful father. As the phone rang, I walked out of the kitchen and made my way upstairs to where the bedrooms were.

Rinnnng!!

For the second time today I was leaving the kitchen, leaving my wife, sister and guest all on their own. The thought of it didn't bother me as much as it should have since I was so preoccupied with the situation we had at hand.

As I waited for my father to pick up, I thought back to the questioning that Illumi asserted in our previous conversation. He led me to believe that there was in fact some sort of hope in this downright awful situation.

Rinnnnnng!!

I thought back to all the conversations I overheard my father have over the phone. I kept digging and digging in hopes of finding something that would help in any sort of way. There was something. Something I wasn't remembering at the moment. It was right there at the edge of my mind, so close to grasping yet I could not remember it. What is it that I had heard?

Riiinnnnng!!

I was younger. Many years ago. Father was in his study. Yes, it was becoming more clear. He was in his study and it was really dark but who was it that he was talking to? Who was he with?

"Mia?" a deep voice sounded from the other side. I recognized it right away.

My grip on the phone tightened drastically. It was not time to think right now. I had to deal with my father.

"It's not Mia" I replied, keeping my voice even and calm.

There was a pause.

"Mamoru?"

Third Person

Mamoru returned into the kitchen only minutes after he had left. Everyone had anxiously been waiting for him to return.

Aki, Mamoru and Jun's child, had fallen asleep in the arms of her aunt, Mia, who held her lovingly.

Illumi remained sitting beside Mia looking as though he were deep in thought. Occasionally he would glance over to Mia to make sure that she was alright before his mind wandered off once more.

Jun had gotten everyone some food and drinks in her nervous state. Out of everyone, she was the most confused. Mamoru kept her in the dark, all this time, for her own protection. He never mentioned much about his past or his family, in hopes of moving on from the dark past he had. Despite being the most confused, she did not complain but instead sat back and supported her husband.

When Mamoru walked back into the kitchen Jun stood up from her chair quickly and rushed over to him. Illumi stood up from his chair so suddenly causing Mia to jump from beside him. When Mia looked over to her brother her eyes hardened. Mamoru wore an expression that portrayed utter defeat and helplessness. He did not return the affection that his wife was displaying for him. He did not react to her gentle caresses as she tried to comfort him. Instead he stood stiffly in one position with his eyes looking distant.
