It wasn't the first time Aislinn ever hit someone, but it was the first time that someone was a man. Andreas never saw it coming, but she reared back and her fist met his jaw with enough force that he dropped like a sack of sand.

"Steve, wait!" She went after him as he turned and stalked out of the rose garden, ignoring Kyra's "How could you, Al?"

"Steve! It's not what you think."

"Really?" He didn't stop, didn't so much as look at her, but kept walking straight ahead. "Because it sure as shit looked exactly like what I think."

Her throat squeezed tight at the icy fury in his voice. "Steve, wait!"

She lunged, grabbing his wrist, and jerked him to a halt. "Stop and listen to me, will you?"

"Listen to you?" He spun about, and even though it was dark, she knew his eyes were ablaze with fury. "Listen to you what, Aislinn? I catch you with a guy, a guy you supposedly fucking despise, and you're going to tell me I didn't see what I fucking damn well know I saw?"

"Steve, let me--"

"Let you what? Explain? Explain why you were kissing some other guy?"

"I wasn't kissing him."

"The fuck you weren't!" He jerked his arm free. "That's the guy, isn't it?" He jabbed his finger in the direction where she and Andreas had been. "The one you lost your virginity to? The one who fucked you and told everyone he could that he did."

The blood drained from her face at his scorching words. "Yes, but--"

"But what? Go ahead, Aislinn, stand there and fucking lie to me about what I didn't see."

Yes, his eyes were definitely ablaze and she couldn't really fault him for his fury. It had to look awful, no matter how she tried to spin it. And this was the first time she'd ever seen him so angry. It was almost frightening.

"Steve, if you would just listen to me."

"Listen to you." He nodded, folding his arms over his chest. "Listen to you what? Try to tell me I didn't see what we both fucking know I saw? Do you remember, at my sister's house, when I introduced you to Heather Carson?"

"Yes, but I don't see--"

He didn't let her finish. "Tell me something, how do you think you'd feel if you caught me--I'm sorry," his voice took on a patronizing tone, "you saw me, with her in my arms."

"I don't think I'd like it, no matter who the woman was, but I wouldn't get mad at you. I'd listen to you explain that I didn't see--"

"She's the first girl I ever slept with, Aislinn," he snapped, "and you and I both know you'd be damn pissed off. So, why don't you go cry on his shoulder? From the looks of it, I don't think he'd mind."

Her blood ran cold as he turned and stalked away. "Where are you going?"

"Home."

He didn't slow down, didn't break stride and she knew he meant home to Midgard. "Steve, wait, don't you even want to talk about this?"

"No, not really."

Her throat tightened and she had to shout to force her "You're being ridiculous!" past her lips.

"I know, what a fucking caveman, right? Pissed off at catching you with another guy. Hell, if I'd been a few minutes later, I probably would've caught you riding him like a horse."

By then, Kyra had reached her and Aislinn's cheeks grew hot at her sister's accusing stare. "Don't even, Kyra. Don't even."

"How could you, Al? With Andreas, of all people."
