As she neared the closed doors of their chambers, she could hear Steve moving around inside and when she opened those doors, she found him in his dressing room, in the process of shrugging out of his now-dirt spattered suit jacket.
"What were you thinking?" she asked, closing the door behind her. Thankfully, Christopher was in the nursery with Tyra to give her and Steve a little private time, so they didn't have to worry about waking him.
"What was I thinking?" He spun around to face her, letting the jacket fall onto the bench upholstered in dark brown fabric. "I don't know? Maybe that no one calls my wife a whore and lives to tell about it."
She rolled her eyes. "I can almost see the testosterone, you know."
"Save it, Ash. I'd do the exact same thing again if I had to."
She marched up to him. "That's what scares me." Resting her fingertips against his jaw, she added, "Have you seen yourself?"
"He hit me. I don't need to see myself to know my lip's busted open and I've got a goose egg going on."
"What in the universe were you thinking, Steve?"
"Pretty sure I already answered that." He swiped his jacket off the bench and stalked across the dressing room to where a row of suits hung. He shoved two aside and grabbed an empty hanger. "Don't even act like you're surprised, either. What did you think I was going to do, Ash? I'm an Italian guy. Someone insults my girl and I'm gonna kick his ass for his trouble."
She rolled her eyes so hard, she was pretty sure she pulled a muscle. "You sound completely mad. This isn't one of your Midgardian Rocky movies, Steve. You thought nothing of going after a highly skilled warrior, trained to kill with his bare hands!"
He draped the jacket over the hanger and shoved the same two suits a little further down the rack to hang said jacket before slowly turning to her. "You have no faith in me, do you?"
"That's not fair."
"Fair? Fuck fair!" He crossed his arms, his eyes glinting with fury. "You think I should just smile and nod and let him get away with insulting me. With insulting you?" He shook his head. "You don't know me at all, do you?"
"I know he could break you in half if he wanted to!"
It was the wrong thing to say and she knew it as soon the words left her mouth. His eyes narrowed and before she could apologize, he said, "Yeah. The Midgardian shrimp is no match for the second coming of Thor, I guess. Thanks, Ash. Nice to know how you really feel."
"Steve, I—"
He threw up a hand as he stalked past her and she sighed softly, sinking onto the now-empty bench. Perhaps it was best to let him cool down before trying to apologize. And she did have to apologize. She'd insulted him. Accidentally, maybe, but she still did it.
With another sigh, she got up and left the dressing room. Their chambers were dark and as her eyes adjusted, she made out Steve beneath the comforter. The room was quiet. The post-adrenaline rush must've left him spent.
She stood there for a few minutes. Part of her wanted to slip into bed beside him and cuddle up to him, the way she did on those rare nights when he went to bed first. On those other nights, she'd awaken to the comforting warmth of him as he spooned up against her, one arm over her waist, the other most likely tucked beneath his head.
Well, from the looks of it, he was flat on his back. One arm was flung over his head. The other bent with his hand on his chest. Hardly a good cuddling position.
