Aislinn could only stare at her for a long moment, unable to believe Jenna actually had the gall, the sheer balls--as McKenna would say--to show up on Steve's doorstep.
"Hi, Aislinn!" Jenna's voice was light and airy, her smile that as if they were long lost best friends. "Is this a bad time?"
"What do you want?"
"I heard that you and Steve broke up, but I guess that's not quite true, huh?"
"Obviously." Aislinn folded her arms over her chest as she leaned against the doorjamb. "What do you want?"
"Just to talk. That's all."
"Forget it. I'm not interested in talking to you. You need to leave now."
"Oh, stop. I know, I've been a little--ah--bitchy the last few times we've seen each other and I wanted to apologize for that. You have to admit, it's understandable. I mean, this is Steve, after all, and you know what a great guy he is. You'd probably go off the rails as well, if the two of you really did break up."
Jenna had a point, but Aislinn was not about to concede it to her. "What do you want? Don't make me ask again."
"Okay, okay. Sheesh!" Jenna's eyes grew wide. "I wanted to apologize. I've been a complete bitch and it's not your fault Steve and I broke up. I wanted to marry him, but unfortunately, he didn't want to marry me."
"It happens."
"I know, but I thought he was the One, you know? And when he then turns around and proposes to the woman who comes after me--the one who's supposed to be his rebound fling--well, I guess I went a little crazy. It's not your fault he fell in love with you. I mean, I can't really fault him that, either. Look at you and look at me. Who would choose me over you? You're beautiful!"
"Thank you."
"Well, you are. And you're tall and thin and everything any guy would want in a woman. And I have to admit, I'm jealous. I loved him, Aislinn. With everything I am. But he wasn't in love with me. I don't know, maybe he never was." Jenna's shoulders slumped briefly and Aislinn felt a pang of sympathy for her. A small one, but it was there. She did know what it was like to think she'd lost Steve, to think she'd lost what they had. It was tough to hate Jenna, knowing what that was like.
Although, she didn't hate her at all, really. Rather, she felt sorry for her. It couldn't be easy, living with the green-eyed monster. Especially when she worked with the very man she still obviously thought she cared about.
"So," Jenna smiled as she twirled her car keys about her forefinger, "I just wanted to tell you I was sorry and I'll leave you guys alone. I hope you and Steve have a long, happy, love-filled life together and that you have a houseful of kids and everything else wonderful in the world."
"Thank you. I hope you find someone who makes you just as happy, Jenna."
Jenna's eyes grew shiny and she opened her purse to root around in it. "Thank you, Aislinn. You know, that's just so sweet of you. So sweet, I almost feel bad about it."
"About what?"
"This."
Aislinn never saw what this was. A brilliant flashed blinded her. A thunderous crack deafened her.
Pain unlike anything she ever felt sliced clean through her.
The impact knocked her back, off her feet, and as she hit the cold tile of the entryway floor, she realized what happened.
Jenna shot her in the chest.
