For the first time in her life, when Aislinn stepped off the Bifrost, she didn't feel like she was home. Not even with Kyra right there beside her.
It made her smile, even if it was a little bittersweet. Home was Midgard, now. Home was in a two-bedroom townhouse she shared with a Midgardian man named Steven Christopher Molinaro. The love of her life. Her soulmate.
"Are you okay, Al?"
"I'm fine, Kyra, really. Just a little crampy on and off. The Advil helped."
"If you're sure."
"I am." Aislinn hugged her, adding, "It's just that... this isn't really home any more."
"Home is with Steve, isn't it?"
She nodded, pulling back. "It is, Kyr. I don't know how to explain it, other than I feel complete when I'm with him. Like I'm whole, you know?"
"No, but gods willing, some day I will."
"I hope so. It's really an amazing thing."
Kyra sighed softly. "Are you going to tell Mom?"
"I think so. I need to talk to someone who's been through this, you know? Just so I know I'm not going crazy." Aislinn glanced down at her sister, who was even tinier than their mother. "Do you think it's because Steve's Midgardian? We know a Midgardian woman can carry a Jötunn man's child, but we don't know if a Jötunn woman can carry a Midgardian man's child."
"Truthfully? I don't know. I don't think it should have any bearing, but who knows when it comes to nature. The only thing you can do is try again and hope for the best."
"We will. Soon." As they neared the palace, she caught Kyra's wrist to halt her. "I wanted to ask you something, Kyr."
"Sure. What?"
"Steve and I are planning a nice, quiet little wedding on the beach. Just us. No fanfare, no huge wedding or reception. We'll do all that later."
"Okay. Mom will be furious, but she'll get over it."
"I know. But, what I wanted to know was if you would come back to Midgard and stand up as my witness. As my maid of honor, I think it's called."
Kyra's green eyes grew red-rimmed. "Really?"
"Really."
"I'd be honored to, Al." She threw her arms about Aislinn's neck and gave her a tight squeeze. "Just send word when you need me. And where. And I will be there with bells on, as Mom would say."
"What does that even mean?"
"Who knows?" Kyra stepped back. "With Mom, it could mean anything. Midgard's a weird place."
"At times. But I think I'm getting used to it." Aislinn smiled at the page who held open the door. "Thank you."
"You're welcome, Your Highness."
"So, you're really going to live there and not here?"
Aislinn nodded. "It's where I belong now, Kyra. Wherever Steve is, that's where I want to be. But, I'll come back from time to time. Don't worry. You aren't going to ever be completely rid of me."
"I'm glad to hear that."
Aislinn smiled as their mother came out of the Throne Room. "Hi, Mom."
"What brings you home, Al?" McKenna's forehead creased with concern. "Did you and Steve have a fight?"
Kyra gave Aislinn's arm a gentle squeeze. "Come find me before you leave for Midgard, okay, Al?"
"I will. And thank you."
