As Steve angled the Denali into the sandy driveway, Aislinn offered up a silent thank you that there were no other cars parked there. He shifted the transmission into Park and killed the ignition. "Looks like we've lucked out and have the place to ourselves."
She leaned her head back against the seat and smiled, even as her nerves danced to life. In a few moments, they would be inside. Kissing, no doubt. And touching. And then he'd lead her down to his bedroom--and hopefully he wasn't sharing it with anyone, especially Jake--where they'd proceed to undress each other. Then they would fall into his bed and he'd--
Heat surged through her. What would it be like with him? She'd never slept with a Midgardian man before, only Asgardians and even so, there were only five men before him. Unlike her brothers, she didn't believe in leaping from bed to bed--although one of those five men was a one-night stand that she didn't regret having--but tended to reserve sex for committed relationships. Maybe it was corny, but she felt it was special and should be treated that way.
"Good. I'm not in the mood to deal with Jake."
He grinned at her as he tugged the keys from the ignition. "You don't have to worry. He won't bother you again."
"I certainly hope not."
He leaned over to brush her lips with a quick kiss. "Come on. I have to pee."
That was the last thing she expected him to say and her laugh popped out before she could stop it. He gave her a hurt look. "What's so funny?"
"The word pee, for one thing." She pushed open her door and stepped down. "And when a guy says it? Doubly funny."
Steve came around the nose of the Denali and threaded his fingers with hers. "I thought it was nicer than saying I had to piss."
"It is, but it's also funnier."
He led her along a slate walkway to the front door and fumbled with his keys before coming up with the right one. As he unlocked the door, he said, "Now, don't hold it against me if this place is a mess. There are four guys living here and not one of us has a girlfriend to keep us in line."
She nodded, steeling herself for something that resembled a city landfill. But as he flipped a switch and the overhead light blazed on, she was pleasantly surprised to see a relatively tidy living room spread out before her.
The house was about three from the beach, and the cool breeze blowing in off the water found its way through the open windows. A sliding glass door led to a weathered wood deck and she walked over to it, peering out into the darkness. "Can you see the water from here?"
His keys jangled as he tossed them down on the breakfast bar. "Not this one. The one upstairs has more of a view."
"I love the ocean. I can't imagine not living near it."
"Yeah, I spent a lot of time at the Jersey shore as a kid. It's in my blood." He smiled. "Make yourself comfortable. I'll be right back."
She nodded, crossing to the slider as he disappeared down the hallway. The house was quiet and peaceful, and since coming to stay with Selig and Celia, those two commodities were rarely found. From the corner of her eye, she saw a radio on the breakfast bar and with a swish of her fingers, soft music played.
Steve came into the room without a sound and she started as his reflection suddenly appeared in the glass door and eased his arms about her waist. "Sorry, Ash. I didn't mean to startle you."
"You move quietly."
"I can wear a bell around my neck, if you want." His arms tightened about her, pulling her against him.
