With a low sigh, Aislinn sank into bed beside Steve. "I think we done good."
"We? I think you done good, baby. I just showed up and made sure football was on."
She smiled as he lifted his arm to drape around her shoulders. As she cuddled up to him, she murmured, "And our news didn't get either of us disowned."
"Always a good thing."
"I have to admit, though, I'm floored that your parents had already figured out who I was. And they never said anything."
"They like you, baby." He pressed a kiss into the top of her head. "They think you're good for me."
She peered up at him. "Good for you?"
"You keep me in line." He reached for the remote with his free hand, plucking it from its resting spot in front of his clock. "In the span of a few short months, you got me to marry you, to buy a house, and to start a family. You're a miracle worker as far as they're concerned."
The television glowed to life. Sportscenter, of course.
She frowned. "You make it sound like I manipulated you in to all those things. You asked me to marry you. Buying the house was your idea and you wanted to have a baby."
"I didn't say you manipulated me, Ash. But, to them, I was the one who didn't want to settle down. The other four were married, with kids, and I was enjoying my freedom and my mother was convinced I was never going to get married, but she was also terrified I'd marry Jenna. No one liked her."
"I can't imagine why," she replied dryly.
He chuckled, and the sheets rustled as he rolled to cover her from the waist up. "Yeah, I know. They all saw something I didn't with her. But they like you. All of them like you."
She smiled up at him, easing her arms about his midsection to trace her fingernails along the solid, smooth planes of muscle along his spine. "They should like me. I keep you in line."
His eyes glinted in the low glow of the television. "You keep me in line."
"Someone has to." At that moment, the baby decided to chime in, kicking her swiftly and hard enough that she sucked in a sharp breath.
"You okay?"
"I'm fine. Your son has strong legs."
Steve's eyes softened. "He's moving again?"
"He kicked my left lung." She caught his left wrist and tugged gently to get him to lift that hand. He shifted his weight, smiling as she brought his hand to her side, where the baby kicked again.
"Damn, Ash..." he whispered, his eyes locked with hers. "That just... holy shit, that blows me away..."
"Bet you don't talk about this when you teach sex ed, do you?"
He shook his head. "I spend half my time waiting for the snickering to stop."
She gazed up at him, reaching up to brush his hair away from his forehead. "I bet the girls in your class fantasize about having sex with you."
His eyes closed. "I don't know. They don't tell me."
"I know I would," she murmured, her fingers slipping back into the dark hair over his right ear. "I'd imagine you kissing me, working your way down along my neck, while your hands came up to cup my breasts."
"Oh, Ash... don't..."
She smiled at the groan in his voice. "I'd imagine your thumbs moving so slowly about my nipples... your lips moving down along my throat." He groaned again, his hand tightening on her belly. "Down along the inner curve of my left breast, replacing your thumb."
