"Al?"

"Go away, Mom."

"You've been locked away in here for days, sweetie."

Aislinn stiffened as her mother sat down beside her on the ledge overlooking the Asgard Sea and draped her arm about her shoulders. "I know, but I don't care."

"We're all worried about you."

"I'll be fine." Aislinn refused to look at her mother, but kept staring out at the white-capped sea. It was a rare dreary day in Asgard, with leaden gray skies and the air heavy with the threat of rain. "I just want to be left alone."

"Honey, why don't you--"

"Go and talk to him? Why? What good will it do? He doesn't want to talk to me. He thinks I cheated on him." Aislinn's throat tightened and her eyes stung and a huge lump rose to clog her voice. "He doesn't love me any more, Mom."

"It isn't a faucet that you can simply shut off, Aislinn," McKenna said, her voice soft but firm. "But the longer you sit here and hide, the easier it will be for any feelings he has for you to fade."

Aislinn turned to look at her mother. "He doesn't want me, Mom."

"Do you still love him?"

"Gods, yes." She stared up at the overhang, fighting to keep the tears from spilling over her lower lashes. "I love him more than I thought it ever possible to love someone. And it hurts so much to think that he's probably with someone else now..."

"Has Heimdall seen him with anyone?"

"Mom, Steve and I broke up three weeks ago. I saw him kissing someone and couldn't watch any longer. He's moved on."

"Did Heimdall see him with anyone?"

"Yes and no. And he said Steve was unhappy. But that was when we first split up. He's a gorgeous guy, Mom. And he's sweet and funny and kind... someone else has surely discovered that for themselves and snagged him."

"Snagged him? You make him sound like a trophy, Aislinn. Is that all he is to you? A pretty face?"

"No!" Aislinn couldn't halt the tears now. They spilled over her lower lashes, streaked down her face, and she shook her head as she said, "He is everything to me, Mom. Everything. Gods, I hurt so bad with wanting to be with him, to make everything right again, and I don't know how to do it. I just... I just don't know how..."

"Go and talk to him. You have nothing to lose, honey." McKenna gave her a gentle squeeze. "You will hate yourself for the rest of your days if you don't."

"But what if I go there and he is with someone else? What if I walk in on them doing... things I'd rather not see?"

"At least then you'll know."

Aislinn swiped at her eyes with the cuff of her black Under Armour hoodie. "I don't think I could stand it if that happened, Mom. I really don't."

"Go and talk to him." McKenna kissed her forehead gently. "It's the only way to know for sure."

Aislinn nodded. Her mother was right, of course, but she had horrifying visions of her walking in to find Steve in bed with another woman.

Her stomach lurched and yet, the images wouldn't stop. He was kissing this faceless woman. Touching her. Undressing her. Pinning her beneath him. Smiling at her the way he smiled at Aislinn before he dipped to kiss her. Before he eased his hips between her thighs--

The urge to vomit surged through her, but thankfully, she held it back and swallowed hard. It would kill her to see Steve, her Steve, doing to another woman all of the wonderful things he'd done to her.
