Evie's POV
I don't know what to do anymore. Liam seems to have turned to stalking people on various forms of social media in the hopes that someone has it worse. He's only gotten off of his computer to get a new box of tissues to cry into for the last day and a half. I've been mostly in Ben's room this time. He doesn't talk about it. All he says is that he wants me to stay with him.
"I'm going to see how Cassandra and the girls are doing," I say, getting up and rolling out of Ben's hospital bed. Walking into Cassandra's room, I see her with papers everywhere as she's puzzling over a very marked up piece of paper on the small bed-table that the hospital uses for meals.
"Cassie..." I start. She hadn't noticed me walk in. She looks up, nods, then turns right back to her work.
"What is it, Evie?" She asks, still scribbling on her paper. I decided she was probably doing math.
"You shouldn't be stressing yourself out over homework. You can get a medical excuse for the school work. I'm sure our teachers will understand if you don't have it done." I plead her to stop writing.
"Ev, I can't let myself focus on anything else right now. I have to stay busy." She explains, frantically switching back and forth between a textbook and her paper.
"Do you want me to leave then?" I ask. It hurt to offer that solution to her problem right now, but it hurt more when she nods. I walk out of the room and down the hall to peek into the other girls' rooms. Most of them were sleeping, but one of them seemed to be talking to police. She was the youngest of them. I've learned her name is Ava. I thought that was a fitting name for her. She had remained so calm and peaceful throughout this entire situation. Even though she was the youngest, I had observed her acting as a mother figure, calming the other girls down and consoling them when needed.
I walked back into Ben's room and instantly took my spot back in his arms.
"How's everyone doing?" He asks, pulling me closer.
"Cassie's turned to busywork, Ava is talking to some investigators, Liam hasn't moved from his computer," I explain to him.
"I don't know what I would do if I lost you too," Ben says, kissing the top of my head. I can hear his voice shaking.
"Ben, are you crying?" I look up to his face to see tears falling down his cheeks. He nods in response. "Hey, hey," I try to comfort him, wiping the tears off his face. "I'm right here." I lean up and give him a kiss. It was a desperate kiss filled with the need to find something happy in our mess of a situation.
"I love you, Evelyn," He says, breaking the kiss.
"I love you Ben" I reply. I look into his eyes. He's looking into mine. I feel tears falling down my face as I see Ben's once bright blue-gray eyes have faded to a now sad, stormy gray. I wonder if I'll ever see the sparkling blue eyes I loved ever again.
Ben's POV
Looking into Evelyn's eyes saddened me even more. The once bright, electrifying green eyes were now softer, less bright, not filled with the same spark they once were. I see tears escape those eyes. Cupping her face, I wipe the tears away with my thumbs. She doesn't move. She doesn't say anything, but I know what she's thinking. Will we ever be able to go back to the way it was before?
There's a knock on the door. Painfully breaking eye contact with those still entrancing green eyes, I look over to see that my mom in the doorway.
"I'm sorry if I'm interrupting something," She says, in a softly joking manner. I appreciate that she doesn't suppress her teasing, even as it's clear that the darkness of the past month has taken a toll on all of us. We still haven't finished our talk from before. I was kind of regretting not telling her anything from the start.
"What is it, mom?" I ask.
"Pack up your things. You get to go home now." She says to me. Then, turning to Evelyn, she says, "You better pack up too. You should go get some actual rest." We both just nod, then slowly pull apart from each other to gather our things. Evelyn keeps looking over to Liam's room. My mom notices this too. "Evie, Liam's going home too. He's going to need some time and space. He told me to tell you that he will call when he's ready."
After packing up, Evie drives to my house. She puts her stuff up in the guest room, and we decide it'd be best to try to get some sleep.
Back in the warehouse, I see Tommi laying on the floor, blood spilling everywhere. Panic takes over my body. Alex is standing over him, just watching. I grab Alex's shoulder and punch him in the face. He responds by pushing me, face first, against a pillar, twisting my arm behind my back. I thrust my shoulder back to get him off of me, only to hit my bed frame with my bad shoulder that was already impossibly bruised. I let out a long groan as I realize it was a dream. I rub my shoulder, trying to soothe the pulsing pain, only to make it feel worse. I lay back down, making an involuntary hissing sound as my shoulder hits the mattress. Turning on my side, I attempt to get some more sleep. It was like 2 in the morning. There's nothing I could really do at this time anyway.
A/N: What do you think of the aftermath? What does Ben's dream say about how he sees Alex in the situation?
