Evie's POV

After school, I decide to drive home before heading over to Ben's. Leaving the parking lot, I try to ignore the bright red jeep driving behind me. Memories of that night when Paul broke in nudged forward from the back of my mind. I shake the thoughts away, continuing my usual drive home.

Sometimes I hated trains. I was over half-way home when the flashing lights and the lowering bar indicated that I needed to stop and do nothing for an absurd amount of time. I got bored. I started messing with my hair, looking in the rear view mirror, when I see it. The red jeep. Had it been following me this whole time? Not a whole lot of people in my school live this close to me. I rise up in my seat, hoping to get a better view of the driver, to no avail.

As I turn onto my street, I eye the jeep still behind me. Or, at least it was still behind me. It didn't turn. I let out a breath, only now realizing how little I had actually been breathing on my drive home. It was probably just a student who I didn't know who lived nearby. My school is big enough for that to happen.

Rushing inside my house, I checked around the entry way, seeing if my mom had left me any notes. She didn't, but I did just get a text from her saying that she was going to be at work most of the night. It really didn't bother me, since I planned to be with Ben for a while after school. I grab a different bag and put only a select few of my school supplies from my backpack into it. I wanted to get some homework done while I was with Ben. I can't let my grades slip any worse than they had last week. I re-brush my hair and spritz on the tiniest bit of perfume before changing out of my jeans and into some baggy sweatpants. Grabbing a comfy zip-up sweatshirt and my second bag, I head out the door to walk to Ben's house.

I knock on the door, hoping that the time the train had taken up had been enough time for Ben to get home. The door opened, and a woman, who must've been Ben's mom stood there a little bit confused.

"Hello," she said cheerfully.

"Hey, um... Is Ben home?" I ask, feeling really awkward.

"No, I'm sorry dear. Who might you be?" She asked.

"I'm Evelyn Wilson, I go to school with Ben." I try to sound confident. My confidence fading as I see her eyes widen in shock.

"Evie?" she asked, seeming to recognize me.

"Yeah, I thought you had forgotten about me for a second Melanie." I say, finding my confidence again. She used to be like a second mother to me, but that was before Ben and I drifted apart.

"No, not at all, dear. You've grown up so much! Come in, Ben should be home soon." She ushered me in, going into the kitchen to, most likely, make me a cup of hot chocolate. I used to always ask for it when I was here. Taking my shoes off at the entrance and looking out the window, I see that gosh darn jeep drive down the street.

Ben's POV

I didn't immediately go home after school.  I had promised Evie snacks.  I stopped by the grocery store and got Cheetos.  We usually didn't have them around the house, but I was craving them and I was pretty sure that Evie loved them just as much as I did.

On my way home I got caught up by a train.  This particular track frequently has long, slow trains going back and forth.  It also didn't help that I was caught behind at least 3 vehicles that have to stop and listen before crossing the tracks.  Looking at my reflection in the rear-view mirror,  I ruffled my hair.  I had fairly long hair for a guy, and while it did sometimes get in my eyes, I'd like to think that it was a rather stylish hair cut.  I fixed it, ruffled it up, then fixed it again.  It wasn't laying right to my liking, but I guess I'd have to get over that.

Looking at the clock on my dashboard, I realize that Evie is probably already waiting for me.  I hope that my mother is home to let her in.
