((An early update because tomorrow I'll be really busy. Enjoy!!))
"Why didn't you tell us you got shot??" You groaned, pointing to a pair of tweezers on the counter. Adam handed you the tweezers and a small bowl. Ross put the water aside and grabbed a stool for you to sit on.
Your ankle was really bothering you, as was your arm, but at the moment you wanted to focus on getting the bullets out of Max's stomach.
"I didn't think.." He began.
"Yeah obviously. You didn't think what? It was a big deal? Because it is." Ross replied sarcastically. You shooed them out of the room to give you some space. To the best of your ability, you reached over and carefully began pulling out the small projectiles from his stomach.
Each bullet was pretty deeply embedded into his skin, so that made it hard for you to pull them out. You steadied your breathing but began sweating a lot. ((Guess you could say you were...sweating bullets. 👍)) The rush of adrenaline kept you from submitting to your exhaustion. You don't know what would have happened without that boost in your system.
Soon you had removed all three bullets and had to cover his wounds. After cleaning up all the blood, you wrapped gauze and bandages around his midsection. He was breathing slowly, and watching you work. You finished and sat back down on your stool.
"Thanks." He muttered. You looked into his eyes. They looked tired and somewhat sad.
"Don't mention it. I can't let you die." You scoffed. A lump formed in your throat at the mention of that word. Die...death. He wouldn't. You saved him, right? He would be fine.
"(Y/n)...how do you feel about me. Is there something between us?" He asked, suddenly staring at the ceiling. You looked down at your hands, and absent mindedly ran your fingers over the bandages on your arm. They were maroon now and saturated with dried blood.
"I..care about you a lot. Ever since you came here, Max. I wanted to be close to you, to care for you and protect you." You admitted. He met your eyes again.
"Would you say it's love?" He asked. His voice was barely above a whisper.
"I can barely remember what love is...but I think so." You replied. For a moment there was silence between you and you weren't sure he was awake.
"Good...I think I love you too." He said. There was so much care in his voice, you could feel the words melting your heart.
"I feel like you should know I love you. In case I..." He started.
"No, Max. Don't say that. You aren't going anywhere." You interrupted. Your voice cracked and your eyes filled with tears. He reached his hand out to you.
Play song now (if you want)...
You stood up and limped closer to him. Taking your good hand, he brushed his thumb over your knuckles.
"In case I do. I love you. You should keep leading the group like you always have.." He said.
"Stop it! Stop! You aren't going to die.." You sobbed. Tears fell onto his arm and your hand, as you were unable to stop them anymore. Max didn't reply and you shut your eyes tight. You tried to steady your breathing and clear your vision. His grip lessened and his hand would've fallen if you weren't holding it so tight.
You opened your eyes and blinked a few times trying to clear your vision. His eyes were closed, his pulse was only a soft thud against his wrist.
"Max! Max, no! Wake up.." You shouted. You sniffed and left his side for a moment to grab some stimpacks. You shoved each of the needles into his arm, trying to heal him. Nothing seemed to have an effect. You stood there, looming over him and holding onto the table for support.
Time ticked by...
5 minutes...
10 minutes...
20 minutes..
Still nothing. No movement but still a faint pulse. You let go of his hand and looked around the room. Not really finding anything, you cried. Silently letting the tears roll off your cheeks.
There was a knock on the door that tore you from your thoughts. Barney came in and asked to look at your arm. He took off the dirty bandages and looked at the wound. It was pretty nasty still but looked like it was starting to close. Barney wrapped up your arm with some clean bandages and looked at Max.
Barney was the second doctor to the group. You would usually help anyone with medical issues, but Barney was always there to step in. You figured Adam probably sent him down to check on you both.
"General, Adams told me yous took out the bullets." Barney said. You just nodded, expecting him to continue.
"I don't thinks he's made it.." Barney continued.
"No! He's still alive...he...he has a pulse!" You shouted, pointing at Max.
"He's in a comas, general." Barney replied.
You laid a blanket over Max's body, and Barney pulled it over his head. You Sat down and cried. Barney left, and you cried until sunset. At sunset, you went into your office. You moved next door to go sit at your desk. You decided you had to do something other than cry about it.
You were devastated, but you tried everything to bring him back. Including locking yourself in your office. The rest of the group was worried about you, they sent different people each time and begged you to come out and do something else.
Always refusing their help, you spent many sleepless nights trying formula after formula and finally at 6am one morning you found it. An adrenaline type shot. It's your only chance to bring him back. You make the substance and put it into a syringe. You take it into the medical room and push the needle into his arm. You kissed his lips quickly for good luck. You wait, and wait, searching for a sign....
............
Your heart sinks, that was it. You tried all you could. Adam knocked on the door and threatened to tie you down and shove food down your throat if you didn't join them for dinner. So you left the office, and Alesa was there, she hugged you. You couldn't hug back or do anything, you were an emotionless frame of a human being. Exhausted and dehydrated from the tears you shed.
Alesa takes you to the bathroom and helps clean you up. She knew you wouldn't want the rest of the guys seeing you the way you were. No sleep, or food does things to a person. She brushes your hair and cleans your face. You look in the mirror and you still looked tired, but at least you looked a little better. She took you upstairs to eat with everyone else, where the guys gave you smiles that hid the pity they actually felt. Perhaps Barney told them, but it didn't matter.
But they tried to pretend like nothing happened. You pushed the food around on your plate, and occasionally would catch Adam's eye. He glared at you, so you put a little food in your mouth and chewed. Adam had managed to scare you into eating your food, and he was happy with himself, you could tell.
At the end of the meal you still felt hungry, but you ignored it. As soon as everyone left the table, you went back down to the medical office. Refusing to notice the worried glances your group gave you.
Part of you really wanted to go in, but the other part of you wanted to give in. He was gone, you had to face it. But despite the voices in your head, you turned the handle and went in. You walked over to Max's still body and slipped your hand into his. You felt for his pulse and your heart skipped a beat when you felt it.
His pulse was stronger than before. That solution must have worked, had it jump started his heart again? You gripped his hand, and stared at his closed eyes. Was it true? Was he finally waking up?? Your breath was ragged, and tears pricked at your eyes. You felt something in your hand and looked down. It was him...he was squeezing your hand back weakly. You couldn't believe it! You bit your lip, hoping you weren't just imaging it all. There was a few minutes of no movement until...
