Sparrow and Robyn had been battling for days now. Every now and then I would be under Robyn's control, and then Sparrow would swoop in (no pun intended) and save the day, releasing me from my prison binds. This process went on for quite a while. Every time a new person would take control, though, I would flop on the floor. People were generally staying far away today because of my random spasms.
Mid afternoon came quick. I was hastily walking to my next class when a quite familiar tug pulled me off my toes and to the floor. This was the work of Robyn, and it was not all too surprising. A few stray students backed away from the spas as she rolled on the ground like a demented mule. And that mule happened to be me--Oreo.
Right on cue, my throat swelled which made me unable to breathe. I kicked and attempted to shout for an ounce of help, but the innocent bystanders were too afraid to get close. Just like all the other times.
"Help!" I squabbled and pushed. My voice was hoarse and crackled with pain. "I-I can't breathe!"
The nurse boy, Cortez, and his mother pushed past the crowd of saucer-eyed students. Cortez saw me bawling on the floor and gave a nervous glance to his mum. She mirrored his distress with an equally as frightened look.
"Mama! It has happened once more!" he said, his Spanish accent mangling shaky English. Cortez was about to assist me before his mum pulled him away.
"Wait, it will go away."
So, once again, I was alone. My ears were popping with a searing snap, my bones felt as if they were mush. Cortez couldn't stand seeing me in this quite horrifying state, despite what his mother ordered. In a flash of dark, silky hair and tanned skin, he was by my side. With all my might, I peeped out of one eye to see two chocolate brown irises in my face. He brushed my bloody mess of a hairdo out of my face to look at me better. I had stopped my unexpected spasm by then. Now only giant tears welded in my eyes. Everyone held their breaths.
"It is okay, Oreo," he sighed, piecing together his imperfect English.
Then the harsh jabs subsided. My tonsils numbed as if I had swallowed a spoonful of honey. I took a deep breath and sighed, laying motionless on the floor. Though I wasn't dead, another being had taken over my system. The whole room seemed to sigh with relief--but my little show wasn't quite over.
Robyn glared through my skin, aiming it directly in Cortez's direction. I felt sorrow for what that boy was about to experience.
"Move," Robyn commanded harshly, her words seemingly choking the whole crowd. Cortez looked at me with pure astonishment. Robyn gave another stoned stare. "I said move, idiot."
"Oreo, am I, um, bothering you?"
"Get. Away."
"This is not you, Oreo."
Then, Robyn did something that I will never forget. Right on the cheek, I slapped the poor boy. A giant red mark was left where his tan complexion once shown. I could practically feel the hurt in his soul. Oh, Robyn would get it.
"Now off me, stupid boy, before I do it again!"
Cortez scrambled up from on top of me and backed away. His hurt expression made me want to cry and give him all the hugs in the world. But no such luck--I'm possessed. He rubbed his bright pink cheek before disappearing into the crowd of kids. Every single person backed farther away, their eyes showing great fear.
