I looked at myself in the mirror. I had refused to, but mom made me curl my hair into loose curls. I wore a black, mid-thigh dress and paired it with black flats. I didn't want to dress fancy to a dinner that I didn't want to even attend in the first place. Mom picked out everything for me, knowing I'll pick the worst things to wear only to have a bad first impression to Daniel's to-be-wife.
I wore top eyeliner and mascara, refusing to wear any other makeup.
"You look great," mom smiled at the mirror.
I looked towards her to see a tear slipping down her cheek.
"Mom..." I whispered giving her a tight hug, "unless those are tears of proud, I don't want to see them."
I let go of her, wiping the tears away from her cheeks and she smiled at my statement.
"Thanks for doing this for me," she smiled.
"Only for you," I looked away, I couldn't see her cry.
I had seen my mom cry enough, it made me tougher every time I saw her cry; Because it made me realize that if my mom can go through a really rough time, I can deal with my small problems too. She dealt with such a horrible person, so called Daniel. My mom was too nice to divorce Daniel because she didn't want to scar Devil and I. But she had enough of him cheating on her with different girls every time. She had no choice but to divorce him.
"Mom, are you crying?" Devil said looking at mom, "did this bitch make you cry?"
"Stop it, Devon," mom said.
He ignored it and turned to face me, "why don't you just leave her alone? Oh my god! I don't know what you have against everyone but please stop treating mom like shit! If anything, you're shit, not her!" He snapped, shouting at me.
"Devon! Stop it, I said," mom yelled at him, "she did nothing wrong! And that is not a way to talk to your older sister, even if she did something. Apologize, now!"
"No, I'm not apologizing to her. Let's just go."
"I apologize for him sweetie, he never acts like this I don't know what's gotten into him, " mom said.
"No mom, it's alright. It's not your fault," I smiled at mom.
For now, I decided to ignore the hurtful words that came out of Devil's mouth and walked out of my room.
Only Devil and I were going to the dinner, mom was dropping us off. Mom had refused to join us and I understood her completely.
"Both of you, sit in the back seat and talk this out," Mom pointed between Devil and me.
I groaned as Devil did the same.
We both sat in the back, Devil staring out the window and I, looking straight ahead.
"I said, talk it out," mom said looking at us through the rearview mirror.
"I don't want to talk anything out," Devil said.
"Mom, leave it," I said.
"Okay, but I want this to be over as soon as possible," she said.
"Sure," Devil mumbled dismissing the conversation.
I kept quiet throughout the whole ride, mom and Devil did the same.
"Behave, okay?" My mother said looking over shoulder at both of us.
"Yes, mom," Devil said opening the car door.
"You too, Lee," she looked at me sternly.
"Yes, mom," I said stepping out of the car.
