November 1st
After that particular incident, i had some trouble with sleeping at night and my heartbeat were unusually fast. As my p.a drove along the road, i scanned for a short dark brown haired woman among the passersby each morning. Hoping to catch a glimpse of her.
I slumped back in my seat, feeling slightly disappointed.
"As long as you dont behave like a mad stalker, i wouldnt mind," my p.a said to me when he drove passed by where Hyo Rin live this morning.
He broke a shocking news upon arriving at the office.
"She resigned yesterday," my p.a told me.
"How did you know?"
"I asked. She looked familiar and i realised that it was the same girl from the hypermarket," my p.a shrugged,"Thought that you might want to know."
Resigned? Why? She doesnt want to see me anymore? Why? Maybe i should pay her a visit later at home.
"Whatever you had in mind, you have to do it later on, after two," my p.a warned me, knowing what i was thinking of at the moment.
"I know, dont worry," i said to him reassuringly. He looked slightly relieved.Tap tap tap tap. The sound of the tip of my pen tapping on my desk helped me to distract myself once in awhile. I kept glancing at the time and i grew tired of watching the time dragged itself. My p.a kept giving me silent hints to stop. We were in a middle of discussion with clients from abroad. The discussion ended about ten minutes later and it was almost 2p.m.
"Do i have anything else later?" I asked.
"No but-"
I left before he could finish his sentence. Hitting the pedals, i drove as fast as i could to the hypermarket.
I asked for the manager and she came to me.
"Kim Hyo Rin?" She asked,"She resigned yesterday."
I left, heading to her apartment. It only took me awhile to get there despite the heavy traffic in the afternoon.
Upon reaching the floor, instead of ringing the doorbell, i knocked on the door a few times. Harder than i thought.
"Why did you resign?" I asked immediately when the door swung open, and Hyo Rin looked surprised.
"What are you doing here?" She asked, half whispering, panicking.
"To know what is the reason that made you resign," i said, trying my best to control my temper. But my loud voice gave me away.
"You resign?" Asked an old man, not older than 82years old, smartly dressed in a tailored suit.
"I did, grandpa," Hyo Rin said to him.
"So, he's your boss?" Jin Hyuk asked again.
"Yes," she replied, let out a heavy sigh. When she finally turned to me, she said,"I dont want to be rude and i had no other choice but to invite you in."
I followed her wake in, they gathered around the prep counter and there were several work paper which Hyo Rin hastily put away from my view.
I recognised her grandfather, as one of the most successful textile and fabric tycoon in the country.
"Mr. Kim Jong Kook, how nice to see you again," Mr. Jee greeted me warmly,"How are your parents? Are they doing well?"
"Nice seeing you again, Mr. Jee," i greeted him back politely,"My parents are fine, thank you for asking. They would want me to thank you for the gift that you sent them."
"Im glad they like it," he added,"Have a seat please. Who would have thought, you knew my granddaughter. Jin Hyuk, you know him too?"
"We've met," Jin Hyuk replied,"He's dating Ye Jin. Still remember Ye Jin?"
He said that on purpose.
"Of course i remember her. I met her a few times at the hospital," Mr. Jee said brightly,"Such a sweet girl. You are one lucky fellow."
I forced myself to smile and this was not what i expected.
"What brings you here, Kim Jong Kook?" Mr. Jee asked.
"I heard that Hyo Rin resigned and i need to know her real reason, because the reason that she gave wasnt valid enough. At least one month notice would do," i said but more to Hyo Rin, who was frowning at me.
"I think my reason are acceptable, Mr. Kim Jong Kook," Hyo Rin said to me,"If you were worried about the compensation, i'll manage, thanks."
"Why did you resign? In a such short notice," Jin Hyuk asked, and for once i agreed.
"Let her be," Mr. Jee dismissed us completely,"I mean, how can a law graduate work as a sales assistant in a hypermarket? You must have found a better job."
A law graduate? That was completely unexpected.
"I'll be starting as an intern in a law firm next month," Hyo Rin said.
"Wow, where?" Jin Hyuk asked.
"Trader Advocates. Not far from your sister's place, somewhere in the city," she said.
"Ah, i know," Mr. Jee said.
"No, please. Just, let me do this on my own," she said quickly.
"As you wish," Mr. Jee looked disappointed,"Good thing our last name is different. So, how was my paperwork? Should be okay?"
"Yes, you just need to adjust certain points," Hyo Rin said, giving him back the paperwork that i saw earlier on.
"Whenever i needed some legal advice, i would come to her. I dont trust my lawyer that much," Mr. Jee said to me,"You can never go wrong with her judgement."
"You're leaving? So soon? What about lunch?" Hyo Rin asked.
"I'll be meeting you again tonight, my dear," Mr. Jee said,"Want to walk me to my car?"
Hyo Rin left with her grandfather and my mind were buzzing. Born into a wealthy family, but yet she refused her own grandfather's help.
"If you're wondering why their last name is different, that man is her mother's father," Jin Hyuk said to me, answering to my thoughts earlier on,"But he remarried. His new wife dislike her. Did Hyo Rin ever tell you that her parents died three years ago?"
"No," i said.
"Kim Jong Kook, i hope you dont mind me asking you this, but i need to know," Jin Hyuk said to me,"You're not here just to ask her why she quit her job, didnt you? You're here to know her real reason."
"Well, she just said that she's going to do her internship," i said, annoyed,"What do you mean by real reason?"
Jin Hyuk chuckled,"You're wondering whether the real reason she quit was you, not the her internship. Kim Jong Kook, you're dating Ye Jin, who happens to be my bestfriend. I really dont like what you're doing now."
Without me realising it, Jin Hyuk and I were face to face. From the tone of his voice, it was clear that he was giving me a warning.
"I dont know what you're talking about," i said to him and it was true.
"I can see that you are attracted to Hyo Rin and for some inexplicable reason, she has feelings towards you too. Dont get yourself involve with two women who happens to be bestfriends."
"Now, please, leave. I dont want to be rude in front of everybody else just now but your dramatic entrance bothers me," Jin Hyuk added, gesturing at the front door. I left immediately without saying anything. My ears buzzed and my mind were trying to put things that i just heard together, into one big mind map. The elevator pinged and slide opened. Hyo Rin gasped when she saw me and i stepped into the elevator before she could step out.
"Nice entrance. You gave my grandfather quite a shock," she said, full of sarcasm,"He even asked me whether we're romantically involve."
"Did you resign because of me?" I asked her,"Its okay. Just tell me the truth."
"That was the truth. I'll be starting my internship next month," she said earnestly,"Why would i want to resign just because of you? Im not that stupid."
I was relieved. Not entirely though.
"And, Mr. Kim Jong Kook, try not to see me anymore," she said, taking me by surprised.
"What? Why?" I asked.
"Its better that we pretend that we dont know each other-"
"No," i said firmly,"Im not going to do that. No way. In case you havent notice, im drawn to you."
"No. You're not. Its just lust," Hyo Rin said to me, pushing me out from the elevator the moment it reached the lobby,"Its just lust. You're not drawn to me emotionally. Goodbye, Kim Jong Kook."
The elevator door closed and i was left hanging. Confused with my own thoughts. Then, an idea came to me. She would be meeting her grandfather later on for dinner. I dialled my p.a's number and gave him a quest.
