In Styx, children are produced by genetic engineering. Couples select the genes they want in their child. Bio-technicians produce the embryo in a laboratory, expressing only those characters. This allows the parents to decide everything from the color of their children's hair to their individuality. The children are not grown in the mother's womb but in a specially arranged system, which is said to be a better womb because of the prearranged yet the accurate amount of nutrients, no chance of death during childbirth, low-risk factor for mother and child, etc. Thus, they are produced more like a factory product.

Next, the children are made to live in a dormitory along with children of their age. They are given education and fed with growth propellant so that they develop fast. After almost fifteen years of growth, adolescents are as mature as an adult. Then, they have to take a test. This test doesn't take into account the smartness, wit or knowledge of the person. In fact, the test is only to check the accuracy of their DNA formatting: to check if they got all the desired genes from their parents and to make sure that they are able to function the way they are required to. The individual gets a new room to live in and along with a job on their fifteenth birthday. They meet their parents for the first time, get time to spend  with friends, and enjoy all rights of an adult. After they turn fifty, they are thrown out from service, forcefully starved, without supplies and normally die out.
