Lily's POV

As Jay and I settled down in another part of the woods, I thought about what life was like when I was back home. It felt so different when I was home, hanging around with my friends, just living life.

My eyelids drooped, and I slowly fell asleep.

I saw myself at school, sitting and laughing with my friends.

"Hey, is that..." I whispered to myself as I gazed at my friends. There they were. Bobbie Jo, Laura, Colbey.

All of my classmates were sitting in chairs as the dream shifted. I was at the front, singing. I recognized the song as Counting Stars. I listened to the song as I sang.

I see this life
like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
In my face is flashing signs
Seek it out and ye shall find
Oh, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm that bold
I don't think the world is sold
I'm just doing
what we're told

The song was cut off as the dream moved to a different scene in my memory.

"That was really great!" Bobbie Jo said. She seemed to be referring to my singing.

"Ehh, it wasn't that great. I don't really like my singing voice," I argued.

I missed my old friends. The dream seemed to be taunting me. Tears threatened to pour from my eyes, but I wouldn't let them. I learned enough from school that crying isn't going to help anything.

I remembered my parents, and how they gave me a choice to go to online school. I had declined, knowing that school was just too fun to leave behind.

I sat bolt upright as I woke up. I slammed my head against the tree branch above me. It made a loud bang.

I rubbed my head, giving the branch a cold glare. I glanced back down at Jay. The noise hadn't been loud enough to wake her.

I sighed, leaning against the tree. "Why can't I just go back to the way things used to be?" I whispered, closing my eyes.

Sleep never came. But something else did.
