"Kiara Malfoy."

Chapter 11: Waking Up

Two weeks passed since Kiara became trapped in her nightmares. She remained in the Hospital Wing, silent and unmoving, as if she were dead. She didn't respond to any medical treatment. Pomfrey wasn't able to give any clarity as to when she would wake up but it seemed the likelihood was decreasing. On the first day, the matron was certain that Kiara would wake up within days. Now, it wasn't even mentioned at all when she was questioned about Kiara's status. The topic was changed instantly, as if it were something that should be completely avoided.

Despite all odds, Fred managed to cling onto a small shred of hope that Kiara would wake up.

He visited Kiara every day during the morning, afternoon and evening, with a fresh bouquet of white lilies. They were her favourite and he wanted to see her smile when she awoke. Whenever there was a free moment or opportunity, he would sit by her side, holding her hand. Sometimes, he would speak with her, to try and convince her gentle mind to come back to him. He wanted to be there when she woke up so all he did was wait for that moment. If it wasn't for being kicked out each night by the Matron, he would've slept by her side on the uncomfortable chair that made his back ache all over. He didn't care that he limped away each night, rubbing the ache in his neck. He knew it was worth it while he waited for her to heal, He pictured the moment that she woke up, knowing that he'd hold her and stay like that for eternity when she did.

But, it never happened.

There was a photo in a gold frame on his bedside table that he looked at every day. He smiled, picking it up and brushing away a small speck of dust that bothered him slightly. He hated the imperfection on such a perfect moment. Photographic versions of Kiara, Lee, George and himself smiled back at him. Fred's arms were wrapped around Kiara's shoulders as she laughed because he was tickling her neck, forcing her smile. Frankly, Fred loved her smile and seeing her so happy. It was the first thing that he noticed about her when she was sorted into the Gryffindor House in her first-year.

Her smile always had the same effect on him, even when it was for different reasons. Her smile when she was nervous, her smile when she was genuinely laughing, her smile when she was mischievous or when she was simply smiling because she was content. Somehow, it made every inch of him fill with happiness. He couldn't describe how beautiful and extraordinary the feeling was when she smiled at him. It felt magical somehow, as if they were caught in a loop where no one is around.

And, for that reason, Fred was in love with Kiara Malfoy. At the age of thirteen, he liked her after their first conversation. He remembered it as if it was yesterday. George and himself were running from a bald Snape, after mixing his shampoo with hair removal cream for yet another successful prank. Kiara stopped them, begging them for directions to her Transfiguration class because she was lost and frankly, quite late. Before they could answer her, Snape caught both of them, threatening detention until Christmas for their prank. As he was about to drag them to his office, Kiara defended them in a timid voice. She said that they were with her the entire time, leading her to her class and that it couldn't possibly be them. From that moment on, Kiara's friendship with the twins began and Fred had an innocent crush. He thought she was pretty, even at eleven. It was a tiny crush; one that he thought he'd get over as the years passed and they'd grow older. It was the Yule Ball however, that managed to change everything.

Fred didn't take Kiara to the Yule Ball, despite the fact that his heart and head desperately wanted him to. Instead, he asked Angelina, hoping that he would be able to force his feelings with another girl who reciprocated them. He recalled Angelina's adoring eyes when she walked down the steps to the Entrance Hall with Alicia Spinnet. She tugged his arm when she reached him, encouraging him to the Great Hall before the first dance but he noticed the eyes of everyone around him. They were all looking behind him with wide eyes. He couldn't help but turn, intrigued to see who it was. When his eyes met blue, he knew that he had failed to move on from his crush. She was wearing a beautiful blue gown, with intricate lace detailing on the skirt that flowed at her feet. Her hair was softly curled around her face, with two silver clips on each side. While Angelina walked down confidently and boldly, Kiara seemed to glide down the staircase, smiling beautifully as she walked with gracefulness. Fred wondered if he knew that she made his heart beat far too quickly to be considered normal. His heart ached as she took George's hand, laughing softly as he kissed her hand in a dramatic fashion.
