Blank Slate

Don't we all wish we had it?
To reinvent ourselves,
To wipe all of the memories clean
That try to drag us down.

To forget all of the tears and troubles
That make us who we are,
But if we had a true blank slate
We'd forget our vital part.

Our part in other people's lives;
Our part in happiness;
Our part in school or church or fun;
Our part in finding bliss;

Our part in comforting others,
And in comforting ourselves;
Our part in always trying our best,
And promising not to kiss and tell.

Don't forget the days when you felt on top of the clouds,
Or when you were underneath with tears running down.

Our experiences shape us
Into who we are today,
So in the end I don't think we
Truly want a blank slate.
