Arzaya
"Won't you eat breakfast, Zay?" Mom asked me as I scurried towards the front door.
"Nope," I said, popping the p. "I'm already late for school. See you later, mom!"
I fixed my hair, pulled down the hem of my shirt, patted my jeans and I was ready to go.
I hastily jogged outside the house and onto the street. I shouldn't have slept late last night but I had such great time talking to Shay on the phone.
Immediately, I saw Stephen's car still parked outside their house. Just when I was about to pass it, he came out of the house with his mom following him behind.
"Gotta go, mom," he merely said. We locked eyes for a good two seconds, then I continued walking.
"Arzaya, my dear!" I heard Sonya call for me.
I turned to her and smiled from a few feet away. "Hey, Mrs. Curry!"
"Well, hello. I see that you're going to school late too like this young man over here," she said, gesturing to Steph who rolled his eyes as he got in his car. "Why don't you give Arzaya a ride, love?"
"What?!" Steph looked at her then at me questioningly. "No way!"
I tried so hard to keep my middle finger to myself. Looking back at Sonya, I gave her a warm, appreciative smile. "Thanks so much, but I'm okay. I might still catch the bus."
"I insist, dear," Sonya demanded, not accepting refusal.
"I'm fine walking, really. I've done it before," I said, thinking of a way to get the fúck out of the conversation because now I really was late.
"You hear that mom? She has two legs. She better know how use to it 'cause I ain't driving for her," he spat irritably. Like I care. Fúck him.
Sonya crossed his arms and looked at her eldest son. "Wardell Stephen Curry, be a gentleman and drive this young lady to school."
Oh, for the love of God. I wish Sonya understood how much I hated her son.
But there wasn't much we could do.
"Whatever, just hop in," Steph told me irritably.
Sonya looked at me encouragingly and I gave in. I mouthed a 'thank you' to her as I got inside Steph's Mercedes Benz.
I felt like I just offered myself to Satan, sitting inside Stephen's car with just the two of us. I got a whiff of musk and mint from inside just as he started the ignition and drove.
"Your mom's real nice," I spoke as he kept as a straight face. "You, however, not so much."
"She called me ET when I was born," he said, eyes on the road. As soon as I chuckled, he glared at me. "Not funny."
"Okay, ET. Relax," I told him. "Where's Sydel, anyway? And Seth?"
Steph manned the steering wheel as the car turned left. "Dad usually drops them off because they go to school early."
