Arzaya
The days went by too fast that I almost couldn't catch up. And usually, I wouldn't realize how fast a week would end until it was Friday and I was back working for the journalism club.
"Arzaya," Eric singsonged as he entered the journalism club.
I looked up from my laptop while I edited my article for our weekly newspaper. "What's up?"
He fixed his thick glasses and grinned at me. "The committee, well, most of them—they want to nominate you for prom queen."
I held my breath. "No way!"
Mikayla suddenly chuckled beside me. "Girl, you realize how many girls would die to be prom queen, right?"
But I'm not like them.
"Why me?" I cried in protest. "I thought I was irrelevant in this school again after Stephen and I broke up."
They both shared a grin.
"Seems to me like you're not," Eric informed matter-of-factly. "The basketball team dropped by at the booth and signed under your name."
My eyes widened. I didn't know if I should be touched because that was real sweet or I should feel annoyed because maybe they were messing with me.
"Aww, that's sweet," Mikayla cooed.
I placed my elbow above the table, sighing. "Who else is on the list?"
"You mean the top 3 nominees?" Eric asked. "You, Shay, and Holly."
"Wow," I said in sarcasm. "How about prom king?"
Eric gave a teasing smile. "I read Stephen, Klay, and Joe."
Oh, no.
"Good luck," he said, nudging my arm playfully. "You have my vote."
"Yeah. We're all Warzaya as fúck here," Mikayla joked.
"You guys," I merely replied, shaking my head.
From the glass window, we turned to see Holly and her two bimbo friends dressed in pink all over while handing fliers to students. She was wearing a tiara and a sash where it says "Holly for Prom Queen."
"So she's campaigning already, okay." Mikayla rolled her eyes in annoyance and it made me chuckle. "Watch her bribe someone to get her votes up."
Yeah, and she's lowkey fúcking everybody's favorite Psych teacher.
"Well, I'm not gonna campaign. It's not like I actually have a chance," I told them. "Besides, prom's tomorrow anyway so..."
Both Eric and Mikayla nodded in agreement. "Typical Arzaya."
I laughed inwardly. "Hey, why'd you guys only announce the nominees now, though? Last year they had it like a week before."
Eric pointed to Holly. "That is exactly why the committee had it a day before prom, so the contenders wouldn't have to campaign and all that. At least that way, it's a fair contest."
"But looks like Holly's prepared since day one," I said causing them to chuckle.
"Yeah. That hóe will try anything to be more popular than she already is," Mikayla mumbled in irritation.
