16 | do's and don'ts
***
These are the ultimate do's and don'ts in graphic designing:
Don'ts:
- Cram your cover
- Use overly bright colours (ain't nobody want a headache over here)
- Use colours that are too dark (wait, does that say yawn or lawn?)
- Overcomplicate covers
Do's:
- Be creative (can't hurt to give it a try)
- Learn from others, and acknowledge your mistakes.
- Never give up!
- Remember that you are awesome!
- Don't be afraid to enforce the rules - it's your cover shop, so keep it that way.
- Ask for advice if needed.
- Remember- you're supposed to have fun! If otherwise, maybe graphic making isn't for you.
The following covers should be simple in most cases:
~ Teen Fiction novels (Generally)
~ Humour
~ Random (big one)
~ Poetry (how do you even make this complex???)
~ ChickLit (Generally)
~ Romance (in some cases)
- These are the complex and/or manipulated ones:
~ Fantasy (duhh)
~ Science Fiction (Nearly always)
~ Werewolf (otherwise it's just weird!)
~ Vampire (same as werewolf)
~ Historical Fiction
~ Romance (in some cases)
*Note: Horror is a very tricky genre to make covers for. Just do what your heart tells you!
