Jared's P.O.V
I couldn't believe the scene that had taken place right in front of my eyes. Lexi had shot Devin for no absolute reason. Just because I was a little too drunk yesterday sure didn't give her the freedom to do whatever she wanted now. I quickly untied her arms and legs and pulled her up into my arms. I looked back once at Lexi who was just standing there grinning to herself like an idiot. I felt Devin squirm and whine in my arms and I moved as fast as I could to get her into the elevator. I got in and pressed the button but the door was taking too long to close.
"Come on you stupid piece of shit close already!" I yelled from anger and we were soon moving up. I nearly ran out of the elevator and outside in general, opening the car doors and carefully setting Devin on the passenger seat. She wasn't making any more sounds and her eyes were closed; just great she was now passed out. I put the seatbelt around her carefully as there was no time to be caught by the police. I shut the door and got in the car myself, starting the car and driving to the nearest hospital.
I soon saw a red light and suddenly stopped. I leaned a little closer to Devin and still heard her breathing. I sighed with relief at that and the light turn green, letting me to speed down the streets again. I pulled up in the parking lot of the hospital and sped out right away, picking her up in my arms again as I speed walked to the front entrance.
"I need help over here, she's been shot!" I nearly yelled at the person at the front desk. She made a phone call and before I knew it there were a group of doctors coming this way with a stretcher. I gently laid her down on it as they started running down the hall. I eventually caught up with one of the people pushing the stretcher.
"Where are you going to take her?" I asked the anger blurting right out of me.
"We need to take her in for surgery and see how much the damage is sir, please wait out here," the girl said and they pushed her through a set of doors.
"It's going to be alright," I mumbled not sure who I was talking to exactly. To myself? To Devin who didn't hear me for sure? I didn't know. I went to sit on a chair that was a little away from the door they'd just taken Devin through. I put my head in my hands and waited.
5 hours later
I was sitting beside Devin as they moved her into a room now right after surgery. The doctors said that it wasn't so easy but they'd managed to do the best that they could. Luckily, according to the doctors Devin had moved the slightest bit during the time she was shot because the bullet had went off target. Lexi had managed to shoot near her shoulder and not her heart and hearing that news really lifted the weight off of my shoulders. It still didn't make things much better though, Devin was still in a fragile position and wasn't breathing properly.
I watched her carefully as she was in a half sitting up position in the bed, her black hair messed around her face. I gently tucked it behind her ears. Her eyes were closed revealing her long lashes. I watched the heart monitor as her beats were shown on the screen. There was just about complete silence in the room until the door flung open. I saw Devin's aunt rush in with a worried expression across her face.
She covered her mouth with her hands. "What happened to her?" she whispered but I knew she wanted to yell.
I pressed my lips together before answering. "She was shot and luckily I was able to be there at the right time or it would've been too late," I said looking at Devin again. I couldn't reveal anything about this, sure they were going to investigate but I couldn't rat Lexi out. She would take me and the whole group along to jail and I couldn't have that.
Soon, her aunt came to my side and started rubbing her arms that had scratches along her wrist.
"My poor dear," she mumbled and then sighed. "W-what did the doctors say?"
"They said she would be fine if she remained calm for the next week and didn't do much physical activity."
I saw her nod as she sat on a chair by the window.
I sat there for the rest of the day even when it was already dark outside. I wasn't going to let her stay here alone. I assured her aunt that everything was fine and she should go home to get some rest. After a long while of persuading she finally left and said she'd come first thing in the morning. Now it was currently 9pm already and I'd turned the light in the room on but it was a different wall lamp that wasn't too bright so it wouldn't wake her up.
I stroked the scratches on her wrist all the way up to her elbow and back down again. It was around 9:30 when I noticed some movement. I saw her move her heard carefully from left to right.
"Devin?" I asked once. "Are you awake?"
She didn't speak, but only kept shaking her head and then started blinking her eyes. I looked at her tired eyes as they stared into mine.
I sighed with relief again. "I'm glad you woke up, everything's fine now," I whispered cupping her face in my hand.
"Where am I?" she asked looking around.
"In the hospital." She yawned.
"Go back to sleep, I'll be here all night. We'll talk in the morning okay?"
She just nodded and closed her eyes again.
At around 11pm I turned the lights off completely and set my head next to hers, falling into a light sleep myself.
