"You're the snake hiding in my daffodils when I'm picking flowers." All Time Low, The Irony Of Chocking On A Lifesaver

~*~

The road. A dangerous place, yet full of so many memories. You could lose someone on these roads - or gain someone. Either way, it all happens for a reason. But sometimes I just wish we knew what the reason was.

We were nearing our destination, and Calum was now the driver because Luke had passed out by exhaustion. He was gently snoring, resting his head in Michael's lap. I just noticed how close this group of friends were, and it was the closest I've ever seen friends be. Michael was on his phone, doing whatever, while I was giving Calum the directions. It wasn't that I didn't want to drive, it was just that my head wasn't clear enough to do it.

Outside of Luke's car was a full downpour - Trees and bushing swirling and then disappearing in the distance as we passed them. Tears fell forcefully and unforgivably from the Heavens. The sky was mean and grey with clouds that seemed to darken the place, making its presence known.

"I don't know if I can drive in this rain." Calum stated, his voice quivering. He looked nervously out the window, noticing that we were the only ones in the car at the moment.

"There's no rest stop here," I said, "maybe you should pull over?" My voice was lower than usual, and everyone else's was cheerful like they always were.

Michael looked out of his window, and then back at us. "Pull over where? This is the highway. No stopping." He ran his hair through his green hair, which was on his head in a messy clump.

"True, but there's no other cars within miles of here." I said.

Michael shrugged, and looked bored. "True. Point."

Now, bright and early, we were all awake at a rest stop. I told them to pack toothbrushes and a change of clothes - which they all did - so we were all in the bathroom changing. The last time that I checked my phone it was 9:30, and we'd be getting to Ashleen's house earlier than we thought.

"Wow, I just met you guys not too long ago and already I'm changing with you guys." I chuckled, not trying to sound perverted. I shimmied out of my black t-shirt, and into a green sweatshirt. Calum combed his hair, staring at his reflection intently.

"Ha, I guess we just trust you." Michael said, struggling with his pants.

"Do you have a plan?" Luke asked from a bathroom stall. I could hear him using the toilet softly, which was kind of gross.

"For what?" I asked him, bending over to tie my vans. I just grabbed any clothes I had available, and I didn't really care what they looked like together. I did a small hair flip, and instantly, my hair was back to the way it always was: perfectly messy.

"Ya know, when you see Ashley."

"Ashleen," I corrected. I didn't really feel like standing up for her, because I didn't know what was going on at home. "And, I don't really know yet. I'm going to just make it up as I go along."

"Well, does she know you're coming?" Michael asked, now standing with his back against the wall. Everyone was now dressed, and was just lounging around.

"About that..."

"She doesn't know, does she?" Calum asked, trying to hide his chuckle, and failing at it. "Don't you think you should tell her before you drop by?"

"That's the thing. I can't . I can't get a hold of her, and I kind of want to...surprise her."

"Well, what a pleasant surprise it will be." Luke added.

"Do you guys have any songs? Any originals?" I asked when we got back into the car. We were now on the road again, traveling under clear skies. The sun wasn't out just quite yet, it was still covered with clouds.

"We've been working on a few." Luke said, now wide awake. "Gotta get out, and beside you. So far, we've only finished a cover of Blink 182's I miss you."

"Nice, well now that you have a drummer, maybe you can finish the others too."

"I don't think we'll be able to do it in time."

"In time for what?"

"The talent show. It's next week."

"Why am I just finding this out right now?" I asked, kind of annoyed.

"Because...We aren't sure if we should enter. We don't have any songs to even enter yet."

"Psh, I bet we can make one now." I said, challenging myself.

"Yeah?" Micahel asked. "What makes you so sure?"

"We can do anything as long we have grit." I assured them.

"Grit?" Calum asked.

"Yeah. It's basically the ability to persevere. You know, keep at it."

"What comes first? The lyrics, music, or title?"

"Title comes last. Music is second, and lyrics are first." I said. I didn't know a lot about music or lyrics, but I knew that I could do this.

"Luke, you and Calum...do your thing." I told them, as if I was ordering them around.

"What do I do?" Michael asked, crossing his arms.

"You?... Do your thing."

"This actually sounds pretty good. But what is it going to be called?" Michael smiled as Luke and Calum hummed the new song.

"Well, it would make sense to call it what we probably said the most." I told him, looking down at the pad of paper I had out in front of me.

"And guessing by the lyrics right now," Luke said, "it would make sense to call it-"

"Turn here!" I yelled, forgetting to tell him the directions.

He quickly made a sharp right, almost hitting the curb, but dodged it dangerously. Everyone leaned to the right, clinging onto their seat belts for safety.

"-Unpredictable." Luke said, once he gained control of the car again. "Wow, thanks Ashton! We almost died."

"I appreciate your sarcasm."

I couldn't really remember where Ashleen lived, and it took us a while to find her house. She grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth, and things stayed like that until her parents got divorced. But her mother had been trying, and recently, they've earned that silver spoon back again.

"Here." I said, my heart pumping in my chest. I didn't really have any emotion at that time, other than nervous and scared. What if she's not home? What if she doesn't want to talk? Too many negitave thoughts were swimming in my mind at the time, and they could not be stopped.

"Good luck, Ash." Michael said, giving me a thumbs up. I exited the car slowly, but surely. I was too afraid to go confront my issues. But Ashleen...the only love I've known? How could I ever believe that she would be anything but an angel? It was hard for me to believe anything other than that.

But once I stepped up those stone steps, I couldn't just simply turn around, and run back home.
