ALEXIS’S P.O.V.

I woke up at five o’clock. In five minutes, I was ready for the day and, this time with my future mother-in-law’s permission, back into the protection of the trees that edged into his back yard. He got up at six thirty, and went out just ten minutes later. Once out of the house, he looked straight at the tree behind which I was hiding. Almost as if he knew I was there. That was kind of worrying.

I followed him around all day, gathering whatever information I could about him. Watching him while he was at school made me realize that Mary was right. He didn’t have many friends. In fact, as far as I could tell, he had none. While that might make things easier for me when I tried to get close to him, it also made me mad. No one had the right to leave my mate out just because he was different. That was one thing I would change really fast in his life.

It was an interesting day. It had taught me a lot about my mate, and I was thankful for that. Having an unknowing mate would have been hard anyway, but without knowing much about him it would have been much worse.

ANTHONY’S P.O.V.

I could still feel the eyes on my back. I had felt them from the moment I had gotten up in the morning, and the uncomfortable feeling had never left me. I was on edge all day, expecting someone to jump at me and try to kidnap me or something equally creepy. I couldn’t pay any attention to any of my classes, or anything at all for that matter. My body and my mind were too tensed up.

When I got home, I was more than sick of it, and totally frustrated. When the feeling got stronger than it had been, as I made my way to the front door, I gave up and stopped ignoring it. I closed my eyes and focused on my other senses, intent on finding out what was causing that hellish feeling. That was really weird. My senses had never been so sharp before.

As I inspected my surroundings, with my eyes still closed, I heard a twig break, with a low cracking sound, to my right. What the hell? I shouldn’t have been able to hear that! I ignored my reasonable thinking and made my way to the place I thought the sound had come from. Sure enough, there was a thin branch broken off a tree, and a delicious smell surrounded the place like an aura of peace. I was sure a woman – and a perfect one at that – had been there, although I didn’t recognise the scent. If she was wearing perfume, it was one I had never come across. One way or the other, that scent made me want to find her desperately. It was as if from that moment I wouldn’t be able to rest until I had her in my arms. That was just so weird.

Mom appeared outside the house before I could extend my search for the source of the scent. I tried to shrug it off as she yelled at me to get in and I did what was I was told. I couldn’t though, but I credited on my imagination the relieved sigh I heard as I went back and the quiet voice in the back of my head, which said just one word. Mate.

ALEXIS’S P.O.V.

We sighed in relief as he stepped away from us. We owed Mary big time. Yes, us. Luna had had trouble resisting our mate’s proximity. She had tried to take over our body and pretty much attack him. With the surprise of both his proximity and her attack, it took all my will power to hold her back. That was just what the sigh stood for. It would have been really bad if we had jumped on him like that.

Luna retreated into the back of my head as he put some distance between us, apologising. I jumped off the tree I had climbed to hide from Anthony and looked at my watch. It was already six thirty. I had only half an hour to get to the airport, since Derek’s flight was scheduled to arrive at seven. Another sigh escaped my lips, this time for disappointment.

I rushed back into the hotel, ignoring once again the stupid lines the receptionist kept aiming at me. In my room, I grabbed a pen and a piece of paper. I hurriedly scribbled Mary’s name on one side, folded it and wrote thanks on the inside. I pushed the note beneath the Adams’ door before going to the airport, knowing she would understand it.
