ALEXIS’S P.O.V.

I was enjoying my time with Tony, doing my best not to think about what had happened, when Derek mind linked me from the house we had rented for just one month. *Four tickets to five in the morning tomorrow bought.* I nodded to myself, knowing Tony hadn’t heard it.

I looked up at him and bit my lip. “How mad would you be if I asked you to leave the country with me tomorrow?”

He raised his eyebrows at me and sighed. “Just to make you go home with me to help me pack. What time is the flight?”

I smiled apologetically at him. “Five… a.m. Sorry about that. It’s my fault, since I did tell Derek to put us in the first flight back we could get.”

He nodded. “I know. I’m cool with it. You had already told me you were needed at home, remember?” I smiled at the memory. It seemed so long ago. “What really happened? You and Derek were speaking so fast that I didn’t get it.”

I sighed. I really did wish I had met my wonderful mate in less troubled times. “I told you we’re preparing to war against the Hunters. Well, my… OUR pack, the Future Pack, is watching our borders while the main pack, which is led by my dad, is training and getting ready for the real war. What happened last night is that one of the guys on duty came across a Hunter in our land. He sounded the alarm, but by the time Peter, my Third, got there, it was already too late for him. Peter killed the Hunter, of course, but… it won’t bring Fred back.” I looked down, fighting back the tears.

He wrapped his arms around me, and I let his scent comfort me as I mumbled into his chest. “He had just found his mate when I left. What am I supposed to tell her now? How am I going to explain to her that her mate is dead because I was too busy looking for mine to protect him? That I was away with my mate and my Beta while he died for my pack?”

I didn’t care about the tears that were streaming down my face and soaking his shirt, as he held me tighter and kissed the top of my head. I had failed my pack. “Shh… you haven’t failed them. You left them to go after the only thing you know for sure will help them.”

I allowed his words to calm me, not caring whether or not they were right. I couldn’t worry about the problems before they actually appeared, and I couldn’t keep blaming myself for something I couldn’t change. I had to focus first on my mate.

I took a deep breath and nodded, making a huge effort to bring back Tony’s Alexis, the free, careless and happy person I could only be around my soul mate. “Okay. Let’s go pack your stuff.”

He smiled, feeling the change in my mood, and we went back to his car, and then to his house.

Mary got up from the loveseat, where she had been talking to her husband, and frowned at us as soon as we got through the door. “You two back already?”

I nodded, sighing. “Derek got the plane tickets for very early tomorrow.” Understanding crossed her face as she nodded, sighing as well. I pointed to the living room, where Reid was still sitting, staring at us, and she led the way back to it.

I sat on the sofa with Tony by my side, holding his hand, and looked at his parents. I sighed again before starting. “Reid, I’m assuming Mary told you what I am.” He nodded. “Did she also tell you about the situation we have?”
