 ALEXIS'S P.O.V.

We – being me and all of my teachers – were relaxing in the deck after an especially exhaustive physical training session, laughing at a joke Matt had just cracked, when we heard a piercing howl and stopped short. Dad paled, and I knew he had gotten a mind link from whoever the howling wolf was. He looked at my mother and the same spark of concern that was in his eyes glinted in hers as he spoke. “What we feared is happening. John overheard the Hunters planning to strike on all wolf shifters by July. He howled when he realized they had seen him, but it was already too late. He is dead. That, especially now, with the Demons conspiring to get their chair in the Council back, might bring catastrophic consequences to our kind as a whole.”

For a moment, no one responded. I was in shock. It was Aemon, the Guide, who broke the silence. “These are dangerous times, Alpha. We must all admit that. But we must also remain calm. The Hunters can’t go on with something that big immediately. It will take them time to plan. That time will be precious to us. The Wolf Moon will be out in four months. It might be our only chance.”

Dad didn’t answer. He seemed to be lost in thought. Apparently, I would really have to ask, then. “Sorry, but… WHAT exactly might be our only chance?”

Mom put her hand on my father’s shoulder, soothing him, before answering. “You finding your mate before the first day of December’s Full Moon, sweetheart. The Wolf Moon will be out then, and if you, as the next Head Luna, go through the third step of the mating process while it is, all of the werewolves will gain strength. What Aemon meant is that that would give us a head start in this war that is about to fall upon us. But we can’t force you to go searching for him just for that. We can find another way.”

Before she was even finished, my decision was made, and there was no doubt in my mind. *I told you our pack would need us soon* and so she had. We were both ready for that. “I’ll go find him. I’ll run around the world if I have to, but I’ll find him before the Wolf Moon. I just need to organise things with my pack, but I’ll leave by the end of the week.” I saw in my parents’ faces that they knew there was no way I would be talked out of it. They got that right. “I need to go; I just can’t wait for the morning. Not when I already have so little time.”

No one spoke. I guess they knew it wouldn’t make a difference. I jumped over the backyard fence and shifted, mind linking my whole pack. *Emergency meeting guys, pack spot right now!* I got four identical mind links as answers, from Brad, Kate, Derek and Peter. *What’s going on, Alex?* I just projected an image of the clearing to them, and felt them speed up.

I was the first to get there, and didn’t shift back to my human form. Mainly, I was letting Luna control our body, so that I wouldn’t be pacing from side to side out of anxiety. The Hunters could still be around, and my 16 year old kids would be coming. I had reason to be worried. That was when something crossed my mind.

I immediately mind linked dad. *Dad! There’s a war coming. There are Hunters all around us. I just thought about it, but we’ll need to prepare to fight for our lives AND defend our borders at the same time!*

That wasn’t all I had wanted to say, but he answered immediately. *Yes, I know Alexis. I’m trying to find a way to manage that right now. I just called an emergency meeting with the main pack too.*
