Chapter 7 - A rush of adrenaline to light up my ordinary life.

*HALEY'S POV*

Shutting the front door, I begin walking to school. Ben was giving Maya a lift to school today so I was on my own. Turning the corner onto another street I stared down at the cracked concrete pavement. Unknowing of any of my surroundings.

Bam.

"Ow" I rub my head.

"Fuck" I look up to see Dylan looking annoyed.

"Watch where you're going" he mutters

I was about to reply when a couple of men rounded the corner as well. Yelling as they did so and pointing at Dylan and I's direction.

"There he is!" One of the bulky men says

"Oh shit, come with me!" he grabs my wrist and pulls me along

"School is the other way!" I run along with him nevertheless.

"You want me to leave you here with them?" he signals to the angry men.

"No"

"This way" he pulls me into someone's yard and we duck behind the bush.

"Where the fuck did that little shit go?!" the man yells angrily. My heart is beating so hard in my chest I'm sure it will explode at any second, but at the same time the rush of adrenaline lightens up my ordinary life.

"Princess?" Dylan whispers

"My name is Haley" I correct

"Huh, I didn't recognise you"

"Ok, are they gone yet?" I whisper back

"Yeah" he gets up and helps me up, much to my surprise. Although I flinch when he extends his hand out to me.

"I'm not gonna hurt you" he rolls his eyes

"I know" I chuckle nervously.

Typical me. I didn't look where I was going and tripped over a broken branch on the ground. I closed my eyes, waiting for the impact that would bruise my skin, but it never came. Instead I felt warmth as Dylan pulled me into his chest.

"Are you always this clumsy?" he asks, letting go of me.

"Yeah" I shrug sheepishly.

"Great, well I'll see you in English then" he nods and walks the other way

"Wait, run that passed me again" Katie says as we walked home together. My parents were going out tonight for a dinner with one of Stacey's friends parents and Jake had a party to go to. Meaning I had the house to myself for the night and I decided that it would be the perfect time for a girls night.

"I ran into Dylan this morning" I repeat

"And he was running from some guys?" maya asks

"Yeah. it wasn't a big deal, guys" I say shrugging

"It was Dylan Jones. It is a big deal" Katie says

"Well whatever, so how's it going with Jake?" I ask warily

"He apologised for avoiding me and he said he really liked me, I thought it was cute that he came to my house and told me instead of waiting until school" she smiles

"So do you forgive him?" maya asks

"Yeah, but he doesn't know that" she giggles

"Katie"

"What?"

"Don't mess with him, please?" I ask

"Fine, I'll tell him when I see him next"

"Good"

"Are you sure it's meant to look like that?" Katie laughs at our poor attempt of making cupcakes

"Well, we haven't cooked them yet, lets just see how they turn out" I say hopefully

"I'll put them in the oven" maya says, lifting the tray of cupcakes from the counter and pushing them into the oven.

"I need to use the bathroom, give me a sec" Katie says walking towards the stair case

*KATIES POV*

There he was. Standing at the top of the stairs in just some sports shorts. His messy, brown hair resting perfectly on his head. His six pack on show to whoever walks up stairs.

"Katie?" he asks and smiles

"Hey Jake" I smile back

"Come here" he beckons me to him and I oblige.

*HALEY'S POV*

"What's taking her so long?" Maya asks.

"I want to start the movie already"

"I'll go check on her" I say, getting off the couch and walking over to the stairs. I walk up and am surprised to say the least. I knew they made up and all but I didn't expect them to be making out at the top of the stairs.

"Um.." I trail off, hoping that will get their attention.

They pull away quickly and Katie's checks turn a deep red.

"Can I help you?" Jake asks rudely

"Yes, we're having a girls night, which means no annoying brothers" I pull Katie away from him.

"I'll see you later then?" he asks Katie and she smiles

"I'll see you later"

"Yeah, yeah, let's go, that's enough eating face with my brother for one day. gross"

"That's debatable!" Jake calls

"Shut up Jake!"

We walk back into the living room and take a seat on one of the three couches. I snuggle into the pillow that my head is resting on and watch the movie.
